Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS)
If you’re an international student studying in Australia on a student visa, the ESOS National Code and Framework (based on the ESOS Act) protects you by setting out standards for the delivery of quality education. The Australian Government wants to make sure that you have a safe, enjoyable and rewarding study experience.
Additionally, the ESOS Framework provides tuition and financial assurance through the Tuition Protection Service.
The ESOS Framework protects your right to:
- receive current and accurate information about your course, course fees and mode of study before you enrol
- enter into a written agreement with your provider in regard to services, course fees and refunds – make sure to keep a copy of your Monash International Student Course Agreement (ISCA)
- receive a refund or be placed in another course if your provider can’t teach your course.
As an international student on a student visa, you must:
- comply with your student visa conditions
- comply with the terms of your Monash International Student Course Agreement (ISCA)
- obtain a release letter from Monash if you wish to transfer to another educational institution before you’ve completed six months of your principal course of study.
The ESOS Framework applies to holders of a Student (Temporary) (Class TU) Subclass 500 – Student visa.
The ESOS Framework does not cover:
- Australia Awards Scholarship students
- Commonwealth-sponsored scholarship holders
- student dependants.
The education providers and the courses they offer to international students must be registered with the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS). You can check this using the government's CRICOS course search and CRICOS education institution search.
Monash is obliged to inform the Australian Government if your enrolment status changes (e.g. if you complete your course early, transfer courses, take study leave or discontinue your course). The University must report you if you breach your visa conditions relating to academic progress.
As your education provider, Monash may disclose personal information about you to relevant government bodies in accordance with the ESOS Act and National Code of Practice.
