This information will assist you to understand your course and the requirements that you need to meet to complete your engineering masters degree.
Each course has specific requirements that you must satisfy to graduate. Your course map clearly outlines, year by year, semester by semester, how to fulfil these requirements. Your handbook entry outlines the composition of your course and the rules you must follow to graduate including the additional requirements Continuous Professional Development (CPD) for professional accreditation (MPE only).
Your course map outlines the recommended progression for each specialisation. Each map is a framework that shows core units, specialisation units and enhancement units. Make sure that you check the course map relevant to the year that you started your degree.
A specialisation is a compulsory component of your master’s program, representing the major component of your engineering study. You must complete one specialisation for your degree. Your specialisation is outlined in your offer letter and applied to your record when you first enrol.
Master of Engineering
Master of Professional Engineering specialisations
Engineering is a highly structured course, which makes it easy to follow as most units are compulsory. There are four units to complete each semester if you are a full-time domestic or international student and two units to complete each semester if you are a part-time domestic student.
An enhancement unit is an elective selected from a prescribed list, unique to your specialisation. You may study an area in more depth from within your discipline or explore a unit from another discipline to complement and broaden your engineering study.
You can use your enhancement unit to enhance your career potential and engage with industry by undertaking a industry experience internship. ENG5008 Industry experience can also be used to count towards your Continuous Professional Development (CPD) hours if you are enrolled in the Master of Professional Engineering.
A list of enhancement units for your specialisation is available in your course map.
Most credit for masters level units is assessed as part of the application process. You can apply for credit for completed university level subjects however there are restrictions upon credit at the masters level. If you are granted credit, you will be awarded credit points towards the completion of your degree and you will not be required to complete those units.
Master of Engineering - Masters accelerated pathway BE(Hons)/ME credit
A maximum of two relevant level 5 Monash Engineering units completed in the Monash BE(Hons) as part of the Masters Accelerated program will be credited to the Master of Engineering once you enrol.

The MPE has two entry points. Foundation credit is awarded as block credit in the two-year version of the program. Credit is granted for 48 credit points. This foundation credit recognises your completion of a BE(Hons) in a cognate field of engineering. Due to Engineers Australia accreditation requirements, credit cannot be awarded for 5000 level units in the Master of Professional Engineering.
