Martin Compton - 22nd June 2023

Martin talks about the importance of sustainable change in response to generative AI. He argues that this involves openness around the limitations of our knowledge and that we need to be guided by a range of different kinds of experts beyond those with technical expertise.

Martin's key messages

  1. Covid lockdowns saw impressive but somewhat temporary change. Generative AI might lead to more sustained transformation to teaching, learning and assessment in HE.
  2. Educators need to accept and embrace the Socratic paradox (I know that I know nothing) as an opportunity to explore undiscovered terrain, and not to be solely guided by those with expert technical knowledge.
  3. Obsessing about detection, academic integrity and threats to conventional assessment masks huge opportunities to develop, change, adapt, grow and learn.
