Dylan Wiliam - 5 November 2024

Dylan discusses the problematic focus of much assessment on forms of work that can be done well by AI. These, he argues, often neglect important aspects of what it means to be a person, learning, in the world.

Dylan's key messages are:

  1. AI tends to show students how to improve the work, when the goal should be to improve the learner.
  2. We have to accept that we won’t be able to detect AI usage, so we need to find new approaches to assessment.
  3. Our qualifications systems—indeed our entire education systems—value the things that generative AI does really well.
