Learning sections

The learning section is a critical part of the learning journey. It is structured consistently to allow students to quickly identify what they are expected to learn in that area and to indicate when this can be completed. Learning can be sectioned into a weekly, daily, topic or modular basis. It is made clear what the expectation is for students to study in their own time compared with the time spent with educators, other students or in the studio.

The learning journey is structured into overview, own-time, real-time and wrap-up sections to assist in the scaffolding of student activity. This follows Jane Vella’s 4A’s design for creative strategies for teaching adults.

This section will have a short, plain English description of the learning. The learning objectives will show students what they are expected to cover. This overview will appear on the Unit Dashboard in the learning content summary.

This section holds the rich asynchronous learning that is provided for students for each of the learning sections (week, day, topic or module) which they undertake in their own time. This study time is not scheduled.

It can be suggested to students that these portions of study are completed before or after real-time scheduled classes or it may be designed for students to engage with at any time they choose to. Be explicit about the expectation for completion of this material. The learning from the own-time study will be linked and inform the real-time learning sessions.

Consider the five levels of engagement when designing the asynchronous learning. The choice of educational technologies will influence the design of the study activities in this space. Refer to the TPACK framework to see examples of how lesson plans can be modified to fit an asynchronous working space.

This section holds all synchronous learning and their associated materials and learning activities that are undertaken by students in class - either face to face or online. These sessions are usually timetabled. Depending on the learning structure chosen, this area may detail a number of different activities that students are required to attend.

After the scheduled sessions materials can be released to students such as recordings or answer sheets.

This section encourages the students to bring together their learning for this section. While no new information is presented here, content may be provided in a different format, such as, short quiz or an extension question.

Key takeaway messages can reference the learning outcomes shown in the Overview section. This is an excellent place for discussion forums to ensure that students have no outstanding issues before progressing with their study. Conclude this area by providing guideposts to the next step for the student.
