Format a Quiz

At a glance

Apply layout and formatting options to structure your Moodle quiz, including adding section headings, inserting page breaks, repaginating and renumbering questions. Explore additional settings such as question checking, restricting attempts by network address, and adding drag and drop or select missing words question types.

Quizzes can now have section headings and questions can be shuffled on different pages. Formatting layout can give your quiz a clear structure.

You can add headings to the quiz with questions on one or more sections.
1. From your unit page, click on your quiz.
2. Click on Questions in the top banner menu.
3. To add a heading at the first page of the quiz, click the pencil icon. Add a heading and hit enter when finished.
4. To add section headings after a page break, click Add and then select + A new section heading.
5. These headings will appear in the Quiz Navigation block when students attempt the quiz.
6. Note: If a section is deleted, the questions contained in that section will be removed from the quiz. Move the questions first if you wish to retain them.
You can add a page break between questions. Click the split icon to split questions over a new page or click the merge icon to merge questions onto the same page
The whole layout of the quiz can also be changed by using repaginate. This means that you can move the page order of your quiz or decide how many questions per page will be viewable.
1. From your unit page, click on your quiz.
2. Click on the settings icon in the top right, select Edit quiz.
3. Click Repaginate.
4. You can choose how many questions will be on each page, then click Go.
Quiz questions can be renumbered. This allows you to use question numbering to better reflect how your quiz is used. A common usage for this feature is separate numbering for quiz sections.
Note: You can also use text characters in the “quiz number” field. The display length is limited, so it is better to use, for example “3A, 3B” etc. than full words.
Editing question numbers
1. On the Questions tab, click on the pencil icon next to the question number.
2. Edit your question number as desired.
3. Hit enter.

Preview your quiz

From your unit page, click on your quiz.
To preview your quiz, select Preview quiz.

Add question check

Use this setting if you want to allow your students to verify their answers and receive immediate feedback. This is helpful for assessment of learning.

Click on the settings icon in the top right on your quiz, select Edit settings.
Ensure How questions behave has been set to Immediate feedback, Immediate feedback with CBM and Interactive with multiple tries.
When a student attempts the quiz, they can use the Check button below a question to receive immediate feedback to their selected answer.

Extra restrictions on attempts

If you require to restrict access or attempts based on a particular subnets on the LAN or Internet or full IP address numbers in the Require network address setting, then it would be suggested that you create a scheduled exam in the eAssessment platform.
