What are the benefits of active learning?

Active learning has been shown to increase students' involvement in their learning process, increase levels of engagement, improve students’ problem-solving abilities, metacognitive and reflective thinking, increase confidence and motivation to learn. Active learning requires students to engage at a higher level of cognition and understanding since they are thinking about what they are learning as they go. Rather than being passive consumers of knowledge, they are builders of knowledge too.
