Create a learning journey

Every learning section in a Moodle unit now includes four sections: Overview, Own-time, Real-time and Wrap-up. These are intended to structure a learning journey for students to assist in the scaffolding and coherence of student activity.

Click on the tabs below to learn more about each section. There is a script that can be used and examples shown for each area.

This section will have a short, plain English description of the learning. The learning objectives will show students what they are expected to cover. All content placed in this area will appear on the Unit Dashboard.

Welcome to Week 1 of the MON1701 Sound Design for Film and Television unit. In this exciting first week, we will delve into the captivating world of sound design, exploring its principles and significance in the realm of film and television. You will be introduced to a diverse array of sound design tools and software, such as Pro Tools, Logic Pro, and Adobe Audition, gaining essential knowledge about their functionalities and applications in the industry. As a thrilling assignment, you will have the opportunity to select a film of your choice for a soundtrack analysis, where you will begin honing your critical listening skills and understanding how sound can enhance storytelling and create emotional impact.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this week, you'll be able to:
1. Analyse the role of sound design in film at an introductory level.
2. Evaluate the interplay between sound elements like effects, ambiance, dialogue, and music in film sound design, demonstrating their impact on character development, mood, and atmosphere, at a foundational level.
3. Demonstrate proficiency in using Pro Tools, Logic Pro, and Adobe Audition to perform basic sound editing and mixing tasks, showcasing an understanding of their core features and functionalities, at a beginner level.
In your own-time there are three tasks to complete. This is followed up by a Real-time workshop. The topic is completed with two Wrap-up activities and an optional Extend Knowledge activity.

Learning activities that the students can complete online or out of scheduled class times. Suggested structure is a series of topics. Within each topic there may be a variety of material presented and online activities to complete.

In this topic there will be three tasks as outlined below.
Learning Activity: Principles and Importance of Sound Design in Film and Television
The purpose of this activity is to help you learn sound design principles and DAWs and draw the connections between them in the form of a concept map.
This activity consists of several tasks:
- Task 1 - Research the principles of sound design.
- Task 2 - Create your concept map.
- Task 3 - Share your concept map in a forum and provide feedback to two other students.
In the next area, Task 1 starts with a Moodle book to structure the learning material. This shows the heads of purpose, time and instructions.
Task 1: Research learning activity
Purpose: This task will allow you to learn the key ideas about sound design in film and television. It will allow you to explore the foundational principles, industry-standard tools, creative techniques and the transformative power of soundscapes to enhance storytelling and captivate audiences.
Approximate time commitment: 45 mins
Instructions: Move through the "Moodle Book" and view the learning activities that are presented. While you are viewing these pages, take note of any references made towards the sound principles. Week 1 Workshop: Overview of Sound Design Tools and Software (Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Adobe Audition)
This week, we will take you on an exciting journey into the world of sound, exploring its fundamental principles, techniques, and applications.
In this workshop, you will:
1. Research the Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) used in film and TV sound production such as Pro Tools, Logic Pro, and Adobe Audition, emphasising their specific strengths and applications in film sound design.
2. Choose a DAW for your sound design projects (assessments 2 and 3) by collaborating with peers and reflecting on your research.
3. Get expert feedback from the instructor on your choice of DAW, which will help you successfully complete Assessment 2 Collaborative Sound Design Project and Assessment 3 Creative Sound Design Project (Individual).

Reflection on the Collaborative Process:
In the "group reflection" (approximately 300 words - forum below), have each team member share their experiences with time-based effects and other sound elements during the collaborative process. Discuss the challenges, breakthroughs, and discoveries encountered while creating the sound design. Emphasise the significance of effective collaboration and the value of individual contributions in producing a successful sound design for the chosen scene.
By applying the skills from the time-based effects activity, students will contribute to a compelling and immersive sound design project, demonstrating their understanding and application of sound design principles in a collaborative production environment.
