Working with the Lightboard

What inspired this activity was the introduction to new technology, namely the Lightboard, into my unit. I was curious and fascinated with this technology, and hoped it would encourage more engagement from students. I wanted to demonstrate greater interactivity using this fresh approach when sharing my research process with students. I felt a return to old-style teaching, facing the audience, as I delivered information to students using this type of technology.

The outcome was a successful recording, using the Lightboard that impressed both lecturers and students associated with the unit. The video was utilised in the course material and positively received by students.

Encouragement to share my experience with others and spread awareness about using the Lightboard technology may prompt others to have a go. An increase in confidence, through testing the equipment, has prompted the consideration of how it could be used in the unit more often.

Overall, the experience led to the recommendation of using technology for creating high-impact, shorter videos in teaching contexts more often. I have a newfound enthusiasm for embracing and exploring new technologies in my teaching.

Begin by getting acquainted with the new technology, such as the Lightboard, through a demonstration or introduction by colleagues or technology support staff. Take the initiative to learn more about the technology, its capabilities, and how it can be utilised effectively. Prepare the content for the recording. This could include creating PowerPoint slides or other visual aids that will be used during the recording to convey key points effectively.

Schedule an appointment with the technology support staff to set up the recording equipment and familiarise oneself with the setup. Ensure that all necessary equipment, such as the Lightboard and recording devices, are in place and functioning properly. Practice using the equipment and recording the content until satisfied with the result. It may take a few attempts to get comfortable with the technology and deliver the content effectively. Once the recording is complete and satisfactory, upload the video to Panopto embed it into course materials for students to access.

In essence, the advice is to be courageous in trying out new technology, even if one may have doubts initially. Embracing technology can lead to positive experiences and possibly even magical outcomes. Despite any preferences for traditional methods, being open to new technology, such as Lightboard, can bring about a sense of nostalgia and excitement. Therefore, the recommendation is to approach new technology with bravery and an open mind.
