This website was launched on Sunday 21 November, 2010.
Professor Andrew Markus outlined the scope of the Yiddish Melbourne project and introduced guest speakers and performers. Professor Louis Waller reminisced about the Yiddish soul which developed in pre and post war Jewish Melbourne. This was manifest in writing, theatre, institutions and in the daily life of the people in the Yiddish speaking community at that time.
Danielle Charak spoke in Yiddish and lauded the versatility and features of the website since it would preserve and teach about the Yiddish life that existed in Melbourne.
With their usual charm and vivacity, Freydi Mrocki, accompanied by Tomi Kalinski, sang a medley of Yiddish songs. The afternoon closed after Professor Markus demonstrated the website by navigating to various highlights. He stressed that this project is a work in progress and as more material becomes available, it will be loaded onto this site.
