Visiting guest: Josepha Wessels

Associate Professor Josepha (Joshka) Wessels joins us from Malmö University until end of December 2024. Joshka Wessels is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and Associate Professor in Media and Communication Studies at the School of Arts and Communication (K3). She will give a talk  during our ETLab  Mo nday sessions on Monday 18 November 12:30pm.

Joshka Wessels is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and Associate Professor in Media and
Communication Studies at the School of Arts and Communication (K3) at Malmö University. Joshka
has a background in Visual Anthropology and Human Geography. Her interests are in film, emerging
technology and immersive storytelling, communication and media for social and revolutionary
change, citizen media and social movements and Participatory Action Research (PAR). She has
specific expertise in the Arab world, environmental peacebuilding, human ecology, forced migration
and postmigration. Next to award-winning social and environmental TV documentaries for BBC
World and Al Jazeera English, she also produced animated documentaries and 360video interactive
immersive experiences and installations. She is keen on exploring the use of immersive media and

storytelling, participative arts-based methods and re-enactment in ethnography and combining her
scholarly and media production skills for qualitative research.
She is currently the PI of several research projects on Sudan on Climate Change Resilience and the
role of graffiti and environmentalism in social change. Furthermore, she is involved in research
environment on Syrians in Jordan, Turkey and Sweden in collaboration with Gothenburg University
and a project on the post-migrant condition in Sweden led by Professor Maja Povrzanovic Frykman at
the Malmö Institute for studies of Migration, Diversity and Welfare.
