ETLab monthly talks: Ethnography in and outside of anthropology
Get ready for a spirited showdown as the ET lab proudly presents the battle of Kari Dahlgren and Jathan Sadowski, debating ‘Ethnography In and Outside of Anthropology’!
Jathan, a boundary-pushing interdisciplinary scholar in Science and Technology Studies, will kick things off with a riveting presentation on his recent foray into conference ethnography within the insurance technology sector.
Then Kari, a devout anthropologist, will take you on a journey through her immersive ethnographic research amongst coal mining communities during her PhD, as well as the captivating world of design ethnography in the Digital Energy Futures Research.
But the real action begins when Kari and Jathan enter the ring for a fierce debate that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Does ethnography belong to anthropology? Are other disciplines distorting ethnography or expanding its possibilities? Be prepared for a slugfest of ideas as they explore the intriguing concepts of anthropology without ethnography and ethnography without anthropology. This is a debate that's bound to deliver knockout insights!
[This ‘debate’ is inspired by Tim Ingold’s upcoming visit, and his piece: Anthropology contra Ethnography https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/full/10.14318/hau7.1.005]
Dr. Jathan Sadowski is a Senior Research Fellow in the Emerging Technologies Research Lab and an associate investigator for the Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making in Society, both at Monash University. He is currently working on a DECRA fellowship from the Australian Research Council for a three-year project (2022-2025) researching the formation, applications, and implications of the insurance technology (insurtech) sector.
