Visiting PhD Niklas Strüver

Visiting the ETLab between January-April 2025, PhD candidate Niklas Strüver from the Collaborative Research Center 1187, Media of Cooperation, University of Siegen, Niklas will present his research on “Un-/desired Observation in Interaction: Smart Environments, Language, Body, and Senses in Private Households” at our Monday 17 ETLab 'work in progress' session.

Niklas Strüver (M.A.) is a PhD student at the Collaborative Research Center 1187, Media of Cooperation, University of Siegen. Niklas' research focusses on the sociology of technology and his dissertation explores the sociotechnical relations of the voice assistant Alexa and the broader smart home in general. After receiving his Master’s degree in sociology with a focus on science and technology studies from RWTH Aachen he started researching Amazon and Alexa in his PhD at university of Siegen. Initially only focusing on Amazon’s voice assistant in the smart home, he has gradually been increasing the scope of research. Since 2024 he is part of the research project “Un-/desired Observation in Interaction: Smart Environments, Language, Body, and Senses in Private
Households” where he works in an interdisciplinary team exploring smart homes, their sensory capacities and their relationships with dwellers.
