Using rubrics
While rubrics are a common way of communicating standards and criteria to students and markers, it’s important to use more than a rubric to help students understand what is required and the quality of work needed to complete their assessment.
Rubrics should be used together with:
- Explicit and clear communication of assignment expectations
- Transparent conversations about assessment practices
- Access to forums and Q&A sessions or consultations
- Activities to develop evaluative judgement, such as:
- self- and peer-evaluation
- marking or correcting errors in samples
- Annotated examples, exemplars and performance samples
