Padlet

Note

This guide is provided for a tool that is not centrally funded or supported by Monash University. While a limited free tier may be available, full functionality typically requires a paid licence. Consult your faculty contacts regarding support, access, or funding before adopting this tool.

Padlet is a collaborative online noticeboard with a multitude of applications in synchronous and asynchronous settings. This provides a platform for students to collaboratively engage and exchange ideas. It supports media-rich posts, allowing for various attachments through upload, web search, or real-time creation.

Padlet has a user-friendly interface that provides several different pre-built templates. For example, the canvas template which allows students to post anywhere on the board, and the shelf format which offers a more structured layout with posts arranged under categories or questions. Educators can personalise the appearance of boards with wallpapers and colours. Functionality can also be customised such as enabling or disabling comments, ratings, likes and controlling anonymous posting.

FeaturesLimitations
  • Ease of access, students do not have to have an account to access.
  • Simple and intuitive, requiring minimal technical skill for educators or students.
  • Create collaborative boards and view, modify, and work on them asynchronously or in real-time.
  • Customise the format, appearance, and functionality of boards.
  • Add media to posts including images, links, videos, files, polls, drawings, video and sound recordings.
  • Upload or search live for media from within the application.
  • Allow comments, likes, and ratings for instant feedback.
  • The free version of Padlet restricts the number of boards that can be created, potentially posing limitations when used across multiple tutorial groups.
  • Monitoring and moderating content on Padlet, as well as tracking contributions for assessment purposes, can present challenges.
  • While you can disable anonymous posting, it's important to note that you cannot restrict access by domain. This means that students could still log in from non-Monash accounts.
