Tips for live-streaming
Quick tips about Echo360 recordings and making them useful for students
- Ensure subtitles/captions are turned on.
- At the start of each activity, educators should use this slide (or similar) to communicate to students that the activity is being recorded.
- Speak slowly and clearly and remain close to the microphone when teaching so that the students listening to the recording don’t miss important details.
- Ensure the activity doesn’t exceed the planned time as the recording may end and students listening to the recording may miss out on details at the end. Echo360 recordings start 2 minutes before the hour and terminate 7 minutes before the hour at the end of the session.
- If a class that is scheduled to be recorded (via Echo360) does not proceed, every effort should be made to cancel the recording before the class scheduled time.
- If a class is cancelled, moved, or rescheduled and an unintended recording is published on Moodle it must be deleted as soon as possible.

- The recording within the teaching space will be set up and handled by the Scheduling team.
- Add the link to the video you want to live-stream in your Moodle unit to allow students to access it easily. See Linking to Moodle for details.
- Let students know how and where to access the Echo360 link in Moodle so they find both the live-streaming sessions and any of the Learning Capture recordings.
- Upload your slides to Echo360 if you want to use interactive elements and build interactive elements. See Adding slides and interactivity to Echo360 presentations for how to do this.
- Get to know the teaching space. Guidance on using the audio/visual control system in the room is available for:
- Adjust your delivery to include the online audience and engage in discussion with students and monitor their understanding of the materials
- Enlist the support of an online moderator to manage the online chat and questions (See Live-streaming for details on online moderation)
- If available, turn on venue camera to enhance teacher presence for online students
- Recordings start 2 minutes before the hour and terminate 7 minutes before the hour at the end of the session. So if your class runs from 10:00am - 12:00pm, the recording runs from 9:58am - 11:53am. Make sure not to leave all the important information at the end.
- By default, Learning Capture records audio, usually from the room microphones and visual content, usually displayed on the lectern PC.
- Adjust your teaching for potential delay or technology lag. Occasionally Echo360 will experience lag during live-streams and the two screens will become out of sync. To re-sync both screens, click the skip icon.
Note: Recordings will begin at the scheduled time regardless of whether the radio microphone or theatre PC are switched on.
- There will be an automatic recording, also known as Learning Capture, that can be accessed in the Echo360 platform.
- Recordings become available between 30 minutes and two hours after a lecture completes, and the media files have been processed. Processing time depends on the duration of the recording.
- View statistics of student participation and views. See Echo360 statistics and analytics for how to view the data.
Note:
- As lecture content can change between years, Learning Capture does not provide student access to past years' recordings unless requested by academic staff.
- Recordings will be retained for two years, after which time they will be deleted. We also recommend downloading your lecture recordings for your own archives.
