Respect at Monash online modules

The Respect at Monash online modules help our community understand what it means to be a respectful member of the Monash community and promote an inclusive and diverse culture on campus.

Students studying at Monash will have to complete either Respect at Monash or Respectful Research at Monash. Staff who supervise research students must complete the Respectful Supervision of Students module, and it's strongly recommended staff who supervise students in any capacity complete this module as well.

If you’re a new student, you need to complete the module by:

  • 30 April, if your studies start in the first half of the year, or in November of the previous year
  • 30 September, if your studies start in the second half of the year.

About the module

The Respect at Monash module is part of our commitment to Universities Australia’s Respect. Now. Always. campaign.

In this module, you’ll learn about:

  • your rights and responsibilities
  • how to identify problem behaviour and misconduct
  • maintaining respectful relationships
  • how to be an active bystander
  • safe alcohol consumption.

This module is not graded, so even after completion, the grade will always be 0%. Once the module is completed, your progress will show as 100% on the Compulsory Units Portal (CUP) dashboard. If you signed into CUP with your Monash student account, your progress will also be recorded in the Web Enrolment System (WES).

What you need to do

  1. Submit the agreement in the Web Enrolment System (WES).
  2. Complete the module – just make sure you do this before the deadline.
  3. Keep your proof of completion record (you’ll receive this in an email).

Record of completion

This module is not graded, so even after completion, the grade will always be 0%. Once the module is completed, your progress will show as 100% on the Compulsory Units Portal (CUP) dashboard.

If you signed into CUP with your Monash student account, your progress will also be recorded in the Web Enrolment System (WES) (it takes about 15 minutes), if you’re required to complete the module. However, if you signed into CUP using a personal email account (or you’re an MRS student), your student record won’t be automatically updated. We’ll need to merge your personal CUP account with your Monash account to get the completion of the module recorded in WES. Just submit an email to servicedesk@monash.edu with the subject line 'CUP merge required'.

You can check which email address is linked to your account in CUP under the profile icon in the top left corner.

What happens if you don’t complete the module

If you’re a new student, you need to complete the module before the deadline to avoid being encumbered. An encumbrance limits your access to essential University systems and services, including your results, the library, re-enrolment, assignment submission, and graduation.

Respectful Research at Monash is a compulsory online learning module for all graduate research students.

The Respectful Research at Monash module is part of Monash's broader commitment to building a community of respect and the Universities Australia’s Respect. Now. Always. campaign. In this module, you’ll learn about your rights and responsibilities, respectful relationships and appropriate conduct when representing Monash.

Staff who supervise research students are required to complete this module on respectful supervision which will help you understand the power imbalance in the supervisory relationship and take steps to ensure this relationship is respectful.

This module is strongly recommended for staff who supervise students in any capacity (especially as casual staff).
