The Ally Network is a group of staff who are allies to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) community at Monash. Members of the Ally Network take a proactive stance against discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and intersex status. They cultivate an inclusive culture on campus.
Allies are not expected to be experts on sexuality and gender. They are simply committed to ongoing learning and examining their own biases. Allies are a visible presence in support of the LGBTIQ community on campus.
All staff are welcome to participate and stand together as allies, including those who identify as LGBTIQ and those who do not.
How to become a Monash ally?
To become an ally you need to attend a four hour Ally Network training workshop. This training is delivered by Pride in Diversity and provides an understanding of the importance of LGBTIQ inclusion at Monash and explains the role of an ally.
Once you have completed the training you can apply to become an ally. This process will be outlined in the training workshop.

Being a Monash ally
Your key role as an active and visible ally is to advocate for diversity and inclusion for all staff and students at Monash. This can include:
- having an understanding of terminology
- correcting destructive myths and negative stereotypes
- calling out inappropriate behaviour and derogatory comments
- sharing what you have learned with others
- displaying symbols of inclusion (e.g. Ally Network postcards, pins, etc.)
As an ally you will have opportunities for further professional development in LGBTIQ inclusion. You may also list your contact details online for staff and students to contact you about gender and sexual diversity.
