Unique Student Identifier (USI)
A Unique Student Identifier (USI) is your individual education number for life. It's connected to your online record of training taken in Australia.
All Monash University students who study in Australia (or have studied in Australia in the past) need to apply for a USI and provide it to Monash, including international students.
Who needs a USI
You need a USI to be eligible for a Commonwealth supported place (CSP) or HELP loan, and to complete your course and graduate.
As a domestic student, you’ll need a USI even if:
- you’re studying overseas with an Australian education or training provider, or
- you’ve discontinued your course after 1 January 2023 and you:
- were studying with Government Assistance (CSP and/or HELP loans), or
- are requesting to graduate with an alternate exit.
Applying for a USI
Australian citizens can apply for a USI from anywhere in the world, but if you’re not a citizen you’ll have to wait until you arrive in Australia to get one. If you’re a New Zealand citizen, you’ll need to land in Australia and go through customs before you can create a USI – when you apply, use your passport for ID and provide your visa.
You can apply for a USI at the Australian Government USI website. It takes about five minutes and you’ll need at least one form of identification.
All the details are on the USI website. If you need help creating a USI, use the step-by-step instructions. You can also find information on exemptions from the USI.
Providing your USI
When enrolling for the first time, you’ll be asked to provide your USI. If you don’t have a USI, you’ll need to get one straight away and enter it before the system will allow you to complete your enrolment.
If you've already enrolled but not supplied your USI, you can apply for one and log into WES at any time to update your details.
Once you have your USI:
- Go to the Enrolment Summary page in the Web Enrolment System (WES).
- Scroll down and click Unique Student Identifier.
- Enter your USI.
If you can't provide your USI in WES, you can get help by contacting Monash Connect.
If you already have a USI but you’re currently on intermission (study leave), you won’t be able to provide it in WES – just contact Monash Connect as soon as you can, let them know your USI number and they will be able to update it for you.
If you don't provide your USI when required, your Monash account may be encumbered, blocking you from Moodle. This may lead to your current unit enrolment being discontinued.
