Supplementary assessments
Update on supplementary assessment limit
If your units have a results release date on or after 4 December 2023, you can opt in for as many supplementary assessments as you’re eligible for (limits will no longer apply).
If you’re eligible for multiple, you should consider opting in for only some of the supplementary assessments on offer (generally it’s better to attempt the supplementary assessments you have the best chance of passing).
Supplementary assessments give eligible students another opportunity to pass a failed unit with a maximum result of 50 (P). The Chief Examiner for the unit will design a supplementary assessment to assess the failed learning outcomes.
Opt in for supplementary assessment
You’re eligible for a supplementary assessment if:
- you receive a mark of 45 to 49 for the unit and your grade is either N or NH (you won’t be eligible for a supplementary assessment if you receive a grade of NGO or NSR)
- the unit offers supplementary assessments – if the unit is ineligible for a supplementary assessment, it will state this in the Handbook (supplementary assessments aren’t offered for these units because of the way they’re taught, e.g. professional practice, clinical placements and project-based units)
- you haven’t completed a deferred or rescheduled deferred assessment for the unit
- you don’t have a finding of academic misconduct with a zero mark penalty applied to an assessment task worth 20 per cent or more
- you opt in within five University working days of the results release date for your unit (before 11.59pm).
You must be able to complete the supplementary assessment on the date your assessment is scheduled and within 90 days of the results release date for your teaching period (you’ll be notified of the assessment details).
Before you opt in
There are a few things you need to consider before opting in for your supplementary assessments.
Selecting your units
There’s no limit to the number of supplementary assessments you can opt in for, provided you meet the eligibility requirements.
If you’re eligible for multiple supplementary assessments, you might want to consider opting in for only some of the supplementary assessments on offer (generally it’s better to attempt the supplementary assessments you have the best chance of passing).
Considerations for international students
Opting in for all eligible supplementary assessments gives you the best chance of completing your course within the standard course duration:
- International students at Monash Malaysia: It's a condition of your student pass that you complete your course within the standard course duration. It's difficult to get an extension of your student pass (beyond the standard course duration) – this decision is made at the discretion of Immigration Malaysia.
- International students at Monash Australia: You may be required to submit an application to extend your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) and/or apply for a new visa if you can’t complete your course on time (your CoE shows the cut-off date).
Your WAM
If you sit a supplementary assessment, the highest mark you can get for your unit is 50 (P), so you might want to consider how this will impact your WAM (weighted average mark). If you retake the unit, you’ll have the opportunity to receive a higher mark.
You can speak with a course adviser about your WAM and the effects on your course progress.
Your fees
If you don’t pass the supplementary assessment, you’ll need to retake the unit (or a different unit) and pay the fees. You can speak to Monash Connect about the potential financial implications of retaking units.
How supplementary assessments are offered
On the day results are released, we’ll email your Monash account. You must check your results for any units with a mark of 45 to 49 that meet the eligibility criteria above.
If you meet the criteria for supplementary assessments, to take the assessment, you must opt in. The Supplementary Assessments Opt-in Form will be included in your results release email and you must opt in within five University working days of the results release date for your unit (including the day of results release and before 11.59pm on the fifth day).
If you have a WH (withheld) grade and you meet the criteria, you’ll need to wait for the result of that unit to be finalised before you can opt in for a supplementary assessment (the deadline to opt in will only start from when you receive your mark).
If you’ve received your final results for other units, you should opt in for supplementary assessments right away – don’t wait until your WH grade has been finalised.
We recommend you submit an enquiry through our course advice form before you select units for a supplementary assessment – if you're unable to get course advice by the deadline, you should still submit the Supplementary Assessments Opt-in Form on time.
Opt in for supplementary assessments
If you miss the deadline
If you don't opt in by the deadline, your grade for the unit will remain as N (fail) or NH (hurdle fail). There is no further opportunity to opt in for supplementary assessment after this date.
What happens next
The units you nominate for supplementary assessment will have a unit grade of NS (supplementary assessment granted) until you complete the assessment. If you don’t complete the assessment at the set time, your grade will be converted back to N (fail) or NH (hurdle fail).
Details of your supplementary assessment
You need to be able to complete your supplementary assessment within 90 calendar days of the results release date. You’ll be notified of the details of your assessment:
- Scheduled assessments: Check Allocate+ for the date, time and location of the supplementary assessment. To find out when your assessment details will be published, see final assessment dates.
- Assessments in a different format: Your faculty will send you an email with the details of your assessment at least five University working days before the set date.
Need help preparing?
You can get advice on how to prepare for your supplementary assessment – all you need to do is:
- Take a look at the prepare for supplementary assessments page in LearnHQ.
- Book a consultation with a Student Academic Success Adviser.
How this affects your results
Until you complete your supplementary assessment, you'll have an interim result (NS grade). An interim result may not satisfy unit prerequisites and could prevent you from enrolling in some units. If this happens, check your enrolment details carefully and seek course advice.
Once you complete a supplementary assessment, the maximum result you can receive is 50 (P).
If you fail a supplementary assessment, you’ll receive the original mark you had when results were released (unless you had extreme circumstances during the teaching period).
Unable to complete a supplementary assessment
You have one opportunity to complete your supplementary assessment. If you’re unable to complete your assessment on the set date, you can apply for a WI grade (if you meet the criteria) – just make sure you apply within 10 University working days after the supplementary assessment date.
If you’re not eligible for a WI grade and you weren’t able to complete the supplementary assessment, you’ll receive the original mark you had when results were released (i.e. before you opted in for the supplementary assessment).
