Allocation methods

The allocation method appears next to the activities.

You need to enter your preferred timeslot.
You need to allocate yourself to a time.
This activity has been allocated a timeslot but you can still change it.
You’re already allocated by your faculty because there’s only one scheduled time, or the timetable process is finished and you can’t make any further changes.
The activity hasn’t been scheduled yet so you can’t yet allocate a time. This could change at any stage, so it’s a good idea to continue checking Allocate+. It might also stay as OFF if the unit doesn’t require preference entry. In this case, the allocation method will change to ADJUST during the adjustment period.
Just make sure the unit is for the current semester and that Allocate+ is open.
There's only one option available for the unit, so you've been automatically allocated to the activity.
At this stage, there are no activities for you to select for this unit. This could be because the unit is being taught online or off-campus, no activities are being scheduled, or the faculty is yet to release unit activities.

Class activity types

There are nine different activity types in Allocate+.

Lectures may be listed in the Handbook entry for your unit, but they’re not generally timetabled. If you’re looking for an activity and it’s not listed in Allocate+, check Moodle.
Lectures are:
- only available online
- generally not visible in your timetable because they are available in Moodle.
Seminars provide students with opportunities for structured learning and engagement in a large group, led by an expert instructor or panel of experts in that specific field. Seminars are interactive and allow students to freely communicate with their instructors and each other, providing opportunities for student-led critical thinking and responding.
Seminars are:
- typically scheduled on campus or online
- visible in your timetable
- available as Online in Real Time.
A workshop focuses on active learning approaches. You’ll often be divided into smaller groups.
Within each group, students are given the chance to work towards one or more common academic goals. Workshops allow the instructor opportunities to identify, share, and comment on the work of individual student groups.
Workshops are:
- typically scheduled on campus or online
- visible in your timetable
- available as Online in Real Time.
Tutorials provide an opportunity for extensive engagement. These sessions encompass a broad range of activities including interactive and collaborative learning.
You need to contribute your thoughts and sometimes even lead activities to resolve questions related to the subject material, moderated by the tutor.
Tutorials facilitate analysis, creativity, and communication skills.
Tutorials are:
- typically scheduled on campus
- visible in your timetable
- available as Online in Real Time.
Applied sessions allow you to apply your skills in a discipline with the support of a subject matter expert. The output from these applied sessions can be used to formally assess your progress or be used as a formative assessment opportunity.
Applied sessions are:
- typically scheduled on campus
- visible in your timetable
- available as Online in Real Time.
Laboratories allow you to turn your theoretical knowledge to practise in a research setting typical of the discipline.
You’ll attempt to problem-solve using equipment, techniques, analysis and reporting that’s expected within the research area.
Laboratories are:
- scheduled on campus in specialist, authentic and/or simulated learning spaces
- visible in your timetable
- generally only held in person.
Studio activities emphasise creative solutions. These types of activities rely on intuition and reflection to encourage deeper learning using space and materials expected in the discipline.
Studio activities are:
- scheduled on campus in specialist, authentic and/or simulated learning spaces
- visible in your timetable
- generally held on campus, but can be Online in Real Time.
Practical activities are held in a simulated environment, where you’re required to demonstrate your response in a realistic situation.
Students may rotate different roles within the simulated environment or work together as a team.
The subject matter expert running these practical sessions will give you individual and team feedback.
Practical activities are:
- scheduled in suitably equipped, specialist, authentic and/or simulated learning spaces
- visible in your timetable
- generally only held in person.
Assessments are timed activities, including eAssessments that are scheduled.

Class delivery modes

You attend a physical teaching space on campus, usually between 8am and 9pm.
You attend your teaching activity online.
If a class has an Online in Real Time option, it allows you to watch it online at the scheduled time, from anywhere, using your own device. You can also participate in online discussions (where enabled) and make notes on the video that you can review later.
You'll know if a class has this option as it states OnlineRealTime in Allocate+. You must resolve any clash with one of these activities because you're expected to attend online at the time of the class. Clashes are not permitted.
An Online in Real Time class can be delivered either by Zoom or Echo360. You can access all links to these classes in Moodle.
If you see the term Hybrid Livestream Class in the description column of the list view, it simply means students are also participating in the class on campus.
When you see JTA in your timetable, it means multiple units are being taught together for a particular activity (so there will be students from other units in the class).
Jointly Taught Activities display in Allocate+ at the end of an activity’s description (e.g. Workshop-JTA, Tutorial-JTA).
In this example, the lectures and assessment activities for ACC1100 are taught jointly, but the tutorials are taught separately.
When you see JTU in your timetable, it means multiple units are being taught together for all activities.
Jointly Taught Units display in Allocate+ in the activity description (e.g. Workshop-JTU, TutoriaL-JTU).
In this example, ATS1142 and ATS2142 are jointly taught units and all of their activities will be taught together.
When a JTU is scheduled, one unit will be identified as the main or ‘parent’ unit and the other unit(s) are called the ‘child’ unit(s).
If you’re enrolled in a parent unit, you’ll see your unit and JTU at the end of the activity description in Allocate+.
If you’re enrolled in a child unit, the unit will show in bold in the Enrolment panel of Allocate+, with a description underneath telling you which unit it’s joined with.
For child units, when you view your timetable (in the grid or list view) the main/parent unit will appear in your timetable. Don’t worry, there are no errors in your enrolment and no technical issues with Allocate+.
Dual Mode means your activity has a combination of delivery modes (on campus and online) – these activities are compulsory for you to attend. This mode can be used when classes fall on public holidays.

Repeated activities

In this example, the same activity occurs three times in the same week.

You need to select one of the tutorials (e.g. Tutorial/03) and attend it for the entire semester – you cannot switch between activities once you’re allocated and your timetable is finalised.

Multiple part activities

Sometimes, activities are divided into multiple parts, and you need to attend each part.

In this example, there are three activity options with two parts – Part 1 and Part 2. You can choose either 01, 02, or 03. Activity 03 has been selected and both P1 and P2 would need to be attended.
