Champions in Awabakal: Monash strikes gold in its best Indigenous Nationals campaign to date

Monash University is proud to celebrate Team Monash’s outstanding success at the 2026 Indigenous Nationals, hosted by the University of New South Wales on Awabakal Country (Newcastle).

Sixteen Indigenous student-athletes proudly represented Monash at the 30th anniversary event earlier this July, delivering an exceptional performance and achieving the University's highest overall placing to date, finishing 3rd overall. Competing against universities from across Australia, Team Monash showcased remarkable talent, determination and teamwork throughout the week.

The team returned home with an impressive medal haul, claiming gold in volleyball, silver in basketball, and a coveted Spirit of the Games Award in Basketball, presented to Monash co-captain Jasmine Greenwood in recognition of their outstanding contribution throughout the tournament, plus the MVP Basketball Award presented to Patrick Natoli. Across every match, Team Monash demonstrated the passion, skill and unity that define Indigenous Nationals, proudly representing both the University and their communities on the national stage.

'Travelling with and representing Team Monash at the annual Indigenous Nationals is undoubtedly the highlight of my university experience. It means so much to me and the entire team.' – Team Monash Co-Captain Dani Gower

Beyond the competition, the team wore a powerful new uniform featuring artwork by Bayadherra, an Aboriginal art business founded by Yorta Yorta siblings and current Monash students Luke and Siena Tieri.

Titled Yanda daborra ('Along a pathway') in Yorta Yorta language, the artwork symbolises the connections between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, the William Cooper Institute, Student Services staff, Elders and the broader Monash community. The design reflects the collective support, opportunities and pathways that empower Indigenous students to achieve personal, academic and sporting success.

The continued growth in student participation in Indigenous Nationals trials is a source of great pride for Monash, highlighting the strength of the University's Indigenous community and the enthusiasm of students to represent both their communities and Monash on a national stage.

Congratulations to all athletes, coaches and support staff involved. Your dedication, sportsmanship and achievements have made the entire Monash community proud and continue to inspire future generations of Indigenous student-athletes.
