Canadian student loans

If you’re a Canadian citizen or permanent resident enrolled in at least 12 credit points per semester in a degree program at Monash University, you may be eligible for an interest-free federal, provincial or territorial student loan through the Canada Student Financial Assistance Program.

You’ll just need to confirm your enrolment status at the end of each Canadian academic year to continue receiving financial assistance.

How to apply

A single application covers both federal and provincial/territorial funding, but each program has different requirements.

Apply with your province or territory:

When to apply

Make sure to apply early to allow enough time for your loan application to be approved, and to get a student visa. For application timelines, check with the financial aid office for your province or territory.

For more information about Canadian student loans, go to the Government of Canada website.

Because Monash doesn’t administer financial aid for Canadian students, we can’t help determine your eligibility. We can confirm your program and enrolment details, and complete certificates for Canadian customs and the Canada Revenue Agency, but the funding body makes all decisions about your eligibility.

Covering your costs

Before you start your studies at Monash, we recommend you check the amount of your federal or provincial/territorial funding. It’s your responsibility to make sure you can cover the full cost of tuition and living expenses throughout your study.

How to claim expenses on your tax return

To claim educational expenses on your Canadian tax return, you’ll need to submit a TL11A Tuition and Enrolment Certificate – University Outside Canada form to the Canada Revenue Agency.

When you file your tax return, we can help with your:

  • program information
  • enrolment certification
  • tuition fees statement
  • loan and tax document completion.
