Public transport concessions
As a Monash University student, you may be eligible to apply for a card that entitles you to cheaper public transport fares. There are different concessions for domestic and international students. Choose from the tabs below.
If you're a staff member or a student who's not eligible for any of the concessions below, the Monash Commuter Club offers a 10% discount on a yearly myki pass.
PTV Tertiary Student ID for public transport concession

International Student Travel Pass (ISTP)
The ISTP gives you a 50% discount on public transport (trains, buses and trams).
To see if you can get an ISTP, check the eligibility criteria below.
Choose your pass
You can choose a 90-day, 180-day or 365-day pass. Depending on where you want to travel, you can buy a:
- Zones 1–15 (statewide) pass – unlimited travel throughout Victoria
- Zone 2 pass – the outer suburbs of metropolitan Melbourne
- Regional zones pass – areas beyond the suburbs, such as Geelong and Bendigo.
Pass | Zones 1–15 (statewide) | Zone 2 | Regional |
---|---|---|---|
90-day | $286 | $178 | $164 |
180-day | $572 | $356 | $328 |
365-day | $1,034 | $644 | $592 |
You’re only allowed to buy one pass at a time, so make sure you choose the right one for you. Check the metropolitan zones page for all the details.
How to apply
If you’ve already got an iUSEpass, you can keep using it until it expires.
Statewide and Zone 2 applications
- Apply for an ISTP in the Web Enrolment System (WES).
You’ll receive an email with your ISTP code and instructions on what you need to do next. - Once you receive your code, go to the ISTP website:
- Click Register (under Student Register) and create your account.
- Follow the prompts to buy your ISTP (you can pay with a credit card or BPAY).
Your pass will be sent to you in the mail in about three weeks. The pass is valid from the first time you use it.
Regional applications
If you need a pass for regional Victoria, it’s best to buy a statewide ISTP (given it covers all zones in Victoria). But if you'd like a regional pass, you need to contact Monash Connect (you can’t apply in WES).
Eligibility
You're eligible for an ISTP if you're a full-time international student, or New Zealand citizen, studying at Monash University. You also need to be currently enrolled in one of the following:
- diploma
- advanced diploma
- associate degree
- bachelor's degree (including honours).
Exchange and Monash Abroad students
Monash Abroad and Malaysian intercampus students are eligible for an ISTP.
If you're an exchange student (i.e. EXCHANGE is written in your course title), you won’t be able to get an ISTP, but you're eligible for a domestic student travel concession.
Students not eligible
You're not eligible if you're enrolled in a:
- part-time course
- Monash College course (unless you've enrolled in a Monash University course)
- Monash Short Course Centre
- graduate certificate
- graduate diploma
- master's degree
- doctoral degree.
Replacement passes
You can order a replacement ISTP card by logging into your account on the ISTP website. Your previous card will be locked within 24 hours of you ordering a replacement. This means:
- the active days left on your pass will be frozen until you touch on with your new card (so you won’t lose any days off your pass while you wait for your replacement to arrive)
- you won’t be able to travel with your old card if you find it/still have it – you’ll need to wait for your new card to arrive.
Getting a refund
If you no longer need your ISTP or iUSEpass myki card, you can get a refund for the days left on the pass. To do this, submit an online enquiry and provide the following details:
- that you'd like to cancel your ISTP or iUSEpass myki card
- why you want to cancel your card
- a clear photo of your ISTP or iUSEpass myki.
Once your refund has been approved, we’ll return the balance of your ISTP or iUSEpass to your nominated account – this can take 10 to 15 days.
