Student-led internships

Step 1: Find an internship unit

Take a look at our industry experience units to find one that fits your course.

Each unit is different, so make sure you’re familiar with the unit structure and eligibility requirements before you apply (you’ll also need to ensure you have enough credit points left in your course for the unit).

Student visa holders may be subject to a 48 hours per fortnight work limit. Before you apply, check the rules for working on a student visa (as well as any exceptions).

Step 2: Confirm your host organisation

Before you apply for a student-led internship, you’ll need a suitable host organisation/placement lined up. Check that your host organisation meets our outlined requirements below.

Step 3: Prepare your application and supporting documents

Make sure you have the details ready to go, including your placement dates and location, host organisation information, supervisor contact details, proposed duties, and any required documents (such as agreements, insurance certificates or employment contracts).

Step 4: Submit your application

When applications are open, you can submit your application through the InPlace portal. Once you’ve logged in, open your to-do list, then select the teaching period, unit and location for your industry experience application. Make sure you accurately complete all the required fields under placement details before you submit your application.

We’ll email you about the outcome of your application as soon as possible, so keep an eye on your inbox (we’ll also send you an email if we need to request any extra documents or information).

We’ll contact the host organisation on your behalf to finalise the agreement and other paperwork.
