Residential celebration: Ancora Imparo Leadership Program

“The Vice Chancellor's Ancora Imparo Student Leadership Program began sixteen years ago – with the goal of enabling Monash students to equip themselves with a breadth of skills and perspectives that they could apply to their current and future roles as effective and constructive leaders. That goal has become evermore relevant, as the world becomes increasingly complex, uncertain and polarised.” Program Director, Professor David Copolov AO

The Winter Residential for the 2022 Ancora Imparo Leadership Program was held in July. Part of a year-long program focused on developing students’ skills in “applied effective altruism”, the Winter Residential enabled 40 second-year Monash students to dive into a vast range of cross-disciplinary topics over three jam-packed days.

Students explored key leadership themes about adaptability, resilience, failure, and how to lead with their own values. But it’s not all theoretical discussion and academic readings – experiential activities designed to test students’ thinking and disrupt their assumptions were featured throughout.

Program Facilitator and Deputy Director, Associate Professor Djuke Veldhuis, guided students through experiential activities to enhance their communication and teamwork skills, saying “the magic happens where people, purpose and passion meet and the 2022 Ancora Imparo Residential really illustrated that.”

A range of inspiring guest speakers – including Mat Bowtell, The Hon. Kim Carr, Cara Davies, Paul Ronalds, The Hon. Julian Burnside AO QC, John Nguyen and Ishka de Silva – led discussions about how to navigate ambiguity, effectively lead teams with empathy and confidence, bounce back from failure, and make ethical decisions as a leader. Students will continue to explore these themes in evening seminars throughout the rest of the 2022 program.

If you are a first year student and interested in the 2023 program, the Ancora Imparo Leadership Program is accepting applications now.
