Queer 101
If you’d like to learn more about sex, gender and sexuality, then Queer 101 is for you. Complete this online module and empower yourself to make positive change for LGBTIQA+ people in your community.
You’ll learn about:
- the LGBTIQA+ acronym
- the differences between sex, gender and sexuality
- how gender identity and expression function in society
- some of the key issues faced by the LGBTIQA+ community, including the gender binary and heteronormativity.
Audience: All students and staff
Duration: 1.5 hours

LGBTIQA+ Ally training
After completing Queer 101, continue building your knowledge on being an effective ally to the LGBTIQA+ community with our ally training workshop. It consists of a two-hour training session delivered either in person or online by the Respectful Communities team.
Once you’ve completed both Queer 101 and LGBTIQA+ Ally, you’ll be invited to join the Ally Network, a group of staff and students committed to LGBTIQA+ inclusion at Monash.
With this training, you’ll be able to:
- recognise the impact of historical injustice and colonialism on LGBTIQA+ identities and societal norms
- identify how power and privilege marginalise the LGBTIQA+ community
- apply allyship frameworks to engage with societal issues affecting the LGBTIQA+ community
- find reliable resources you can use for self-directed allyship.

Trans and gender diverse workshops

Transgender Awareness
This training introduces you to gender diversity, identity and expression, highlighting transgender discrimination and disadvantage, and its effect on mental health. These sessions are interactive so there will be plenty of time for questions and answers.
At the end of this workshop, you'll be able to:
- identify the barriers to inclusion faced by the transgender and gender diverse community
- understand how transgender and gender diverse people are affected by transphobia
- implement practical strategies and language skills to support transgender and gender diverse people.
