Cross-institutional study

If you're a student at another tertiary institution in Australia or New Zealand, you can apply to study at Monash and get credit towards your course at your home institution.

If accepted for cross-institutional study, you won’t be enrolled in a Monash degree program or receive an award, but you can order an academic record (transcript). See the Results section further down.

Applying for cross-institutional study is a competitive process due to a limited number of places, which are made available by the faculty teaching the unit.

Where to find unit info

You’ll find undergraduate, graduate and off-campus unit information, including prerequisites, in the Monash Handbook.

Some faculties offer units outside the standard semesters. See summer, winter and November teaching periods.

How to apply

  1. Complete a Cross-institutional Study Application (pdf, 0.66 mb).
  2. Provide all supporting documents:

  4. Submit your application to future@monash.edu with the subject line ‘Cross-institutional Study Application’ by the closing date.

Semester one – 30 January

Enrolment

We'll advise you in writing of the outcome of your application. If successful, you'll receive information on how to enrol in the units.

If amending your enrolment for cross-institutional study, you need to do so at both Monash and your home institution by the deadlines to avoid fees and fail grades. See Monash University census dates.

Fees

You'll be charged either at the Commonwealth supported place (CSP) or full-fee rate, based on selection criteria and the availability of places.

Once we’ve assessed your fees (payable to Monash University), we’ll let you know by email that you can view your fee statement in the Web Enrolment System (WES). (If you’re enrolling in units at Monash University Malaysia, we’ll send you an invoice.)

CSP rate 

If you’ve got a CSP at your home institution and you’re applying for a Monash unit that’s a core requirement of your course, you pay at the CSP rate. But, if the unit is an elective, you may have to pay at the full-fee rate.

Your home institution may need to send us a letter confirming your CSP.

If we offer you a CSP, you need to complete the Request for Commonwealth Support and HECS-HELP form in WES before the census date.

Full-fee rate

Full-fee rates are set annually and vary according to faculty. Use the course fees calculator to figure out what you pay.

Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF)

Monash will charge the SSAF based on your enrolment mode and study load. See SSAF fee amount. You can't get an SA-HELP loan to defer payments for cross-institutional study. Monash will not charge the SSAF if you've been charged by your home institution for the cross-institutional study.

You need to provide proof of upfront payment or incurred SA-HELP within the relevant academic year for the SSAF to be reversed or refunded by Monash University.
