Deferred and supplementary exams and assessment

Deferred exam or final assessment

If your application for special consideration is successful, you may be granted a deferred exam or alternative assessment task.

A deferred exam is an exam postponed to a later date. These are held during the official deferred exam period, unless your faculty emails your Monash account with an alternative time, giving five University working days’ notice.

If you are granted a deferred exam, your unit grade will be DEF (deferred exam) in the Web Enrolment System (WES). It is your responsibility to be available to sit a deferred exam at the scheduled time.

For details on eligibility and how to apply, see special consideration.

Supplementary exam or assessment

Your faculty may grant you a supplementary assessment if:

  • you fail a unit by no more than five per cent or equivalent below the pass rate (a mark of 45-49)
  • you have passed all other units during the same teaching period
  • a pass would complete all academic requirements for the degree or the unit failure would significantly impact on your academic progress.

You can be granted supplementary assessment for no more than two failed units in one course. No further delay of assessment is possible. The chief examiner for the unit will determine whether this is in the form of an additional exam or assessment task.

You do not apply for a supplementary exam or assessment task (with the exception of Arts units). If applicable, your faculty will offer it to you. If offered a supplementary exam or assessment, your unit grade will display NS (supplementary assessment granted) in WES.

Exception
Only Arts students can apply for a supplementary assessment. See Arts Supplementary Assessment Procedures.

Faculty rules

The faculties listed below have additional guidelines for granting supplementary assessment:

How this affects your results

Until you complete your deferred exam or supplementary exam/assessment, you will have an incomplete result. An incomplete result does not satisfy unit prerequisites. This could prevent you from enrolling in some units. Please check your enrolment carefully and consult your faculty.

Once you complete a deferred exam or final assessment, the result of that assessment will be final.

Once you complete a supplementary exam or assessment, the maximum result you can receive is 50% P (pass grade). If you fail the supplementary assessment your result will be returned to the original grade.
