New state and national initiatives for international students
Monash University is proud to participate in the recent state and national initiatives to support the continued return of international students and improve their education experiences and employability outcomes.
Post-Study Work Rights
The Australian Government recently announced an increase in the duration of post-study work rights of international students to strengthen the pipeline of skilled labour.
Post-study work rights for select degrees will be increased from:
- Two years to four years for select bachelor’s degrees
- Three years to five years for select master’s degrees
- Four years to six years for select PhDs.
Monash University supports these important changes which demonstrate a clear commitment to international students and acknowledges the important role they play in the success of Australia. They provide a global perspective to our entire student experience, add vitality to our campuses and the broader Victorian community, and contribute to the economy and skills base of our nation and the nation's future influence globally.
The University will continue to provide opportunities and programs aligned with industry and innovation, research and discovery alongside your degree such as the Global Immersion Guarantee.
We look forward to continuing to work with our international students who remain in Australia after graduation to assist in connecting them with employers and communities as part of the already established Career Connect and Monash Talent programs.
Victoria’s International Education Recovery Plan 2025
Monash University welcomes the Victorian Government’s $52.9 million plan to support international education and become a global leader in high-quality, innovative and inclusive education.
Victoria’s International Education Recovery Plan 2025 demonstrates a commitment by the government to support Victoria’s highly-regarded tertiary institutions to build on their global reputations and become destinations of choice for international students.
Monash looks forward to working with the Victorian Government to implement the plan, including ways to innovate education, enhance experience and employability of students, build partnerships and collaborations, and to promote our world-leading education to the world.
Victorian Commitment to Action
Monash University is supportive of the Victorian Commitment to Action: Improving International Student Employment Outcomes, which outlines practical steps employers can take to improve pathways to quality and relevant employment outcomes for international students and graduates. The commitment includes actions such as: employ more, offer more work experience, targets, remove barriers and share success stories.
As one of Australia’s most international universities, Monash is committed to the ongoing support of our international students – from arrival, throughout their studies, and following graduation. We continue to work with the government and industry employers to provide more employment opportunities.
We also encourage all Monash students to attend Career Connect workshops and events, book a career consultation session and log in to Career Gateway portal to access resources we provide to maximise your employment prospects.
