Eligibility and Program requirements

What are the eligibility requirements? (Undergraduates)

6 credit points

ATS3935 Professional Practice is a 6 credit point professional practice unit and can be undertaken in Australia or overseas.

To be eligible for this unit you will need:

Room for a 6-point unit in your study progression
Credit (60) WAM average
Completion of at least 12 points of second-year Arts units (at the commencement of the internship)

12 credit points
ATS3129 Arts internship and ATS3130 Arts International Internship are both 12 credit point units. ATS3129 Arts internship is for placements in Australia and ATS3130 Arts International Internship is for placements overseas.

For both units you will need:

Room for a 12 credit point unit in your study progression
Distinction (70) WAM average
Completion of 96 points of study with a minimum of 48 points in Arts (at the commencement of the internship)

What are the eligibility requirements? (Graduates)

APG5044 Professional internship is a 12 credit point professional practice unit and can be undertaken in Australia or overseas.

To be eligible for this unit you will need:

Credit (60) WAM average across units contributing to relevant masters degree
Have room for a 12-point unit in your study progression
APG5044 Unit is a capstone and should be completed in the final year/semester of your masters degree. Students in a 72 or 96 point degree will need to have completed a minimum of 48 credit points by the time of starting their internship. If you are undertaking a 48 point masters this requirement is waived and you can undertake a WIL unit in the final semester of your masters.

Faculty approval:

Student sourced placements: If you have sourced your own placement, you will need to obtain signed approval from the relevant Director of Programs on the last page of the “Student placement pack”. See here for more information.

Monash sourced placements: Graduate students will be matched to opportunities that have been pre-approved by the relevant Director of Programs as being in line with the learning and career outcomes of that Graduate program.

How many workplace hours do I need to complete?

ATS3935 6 credit point unit: This placement has a minimum duration of 77 hours across a teaching period. You can undertake the unit in any teaching period, including over the summer and winter breaks.

APG5044/ATS3129/ATS3130 12 credit point units: The placements have a minimum duration of 144 hours across a teaching period. You can undertake the unit any teaching period, including over the summer and winter breaks.

In addition to workplace hours, you are required to submit assessments. See the handbook for requirements.

Can a WIL unit be a free elective or count to my major? (Undergraduates)

Depending on your eligibility, the WIL units can be used as a free elective or to count to your major. When you apply, you can elect whether you want to count it towards a particular major, or use a free elective. The WIL team will then seek course advice and will let you know if there is any discrepancy.

Monash sourced: If you will count the internship to a major, the WIL team will ensure you’re matched to an opportunity that aligns with the learning outcomes of that major. We will seek faculty approval when required.

Student sourced: If you wish for your placement to count to a major, you will need to demonstrate in your application how the opportunity aligns with the learning outcomes of your major. The WIL team may contact you to seek further information. If you cannot demonstrate this, the WIL team may not be able to approve your application.

Are placements remote or onsite?

We have adapted to the current climate and are delivering a Virtual WIL (VWIL) program where necessary. Some hosts will request students attend onsite (when local restrictions allow), some hosts will deliver the placement 100% remotely, and others will offer a hybrid placement, (a combination of remote and onsite). When matched to a placement, you will be advised what placement type you have been matched with.

Are internships paid?

All Monash sourced placements are unpaid. Host organisations are not required to pay a student completing an internship for credit as they receive academic credit for their placements.

Fair Work

Unpaid placements are allowed under Fair Work guidelines, when they are undertaken for credit (77 hours for 6 credit point units, or 144 hours for 12 credit point units). You are entitled to be paid for any hours you undertake above the minimum hours required of the unit. If in doubt, please consult with Fair Work.

Student sourced placements: Sometimes students source paid placements. The WIL team is unable to acknowledge any hours that are above the minimum required for the unit, and all documentation and confirmations will only refer to the minimum required hours.

Can I use my paid employment towards a WIL unit?

In some circumstances, you may be able to use your current role to count towards a WIL unit. Please be advised that there is a difference between paid work and undertaking an internship. When submitting a student sourced application, in your proposal responses, please demonstrate:

How the tasks undertaken in this role relate to and / or support the learning outcomes of your degree
How the workplace supervision meets the expectations of workplace learning (you will need to appoint a suitably qualified mentor who can guide you through the placement, and does not necessarily need to be your current manager).

International students or students based overseas

Attention: International Student Visa holders

All international student visa holders must comply with the work limitations specified on their student visa. Your WIL experience may count towards your work limitation – please check this website for specific information about WIL and visa conditions. Please refer to the Your student visa web page for further information.

Placements for students based overseas with an overseas host

Your internship start and end dates must be within the teaching period dates of the semester you are applying to. Students can only be placed in the standard teaching periods: Term 1, Semester 1, Trimester 2 (Winter), Semester 2 and Summer A. Any applications submitted with dates outside of the teaching periods will be made unsuccessful.

I am currently overseas - What are my options?

Students residing in their country of citizenship or permanent residency may undertake a placement offshore. The placement must be Student Sourced. Monash sourced international placements will not be offered until further notice.

Monash sourced placements with Australian-based hosts: You can also apply to be matched to a Monash sourced placement. These hosts are mainly based in Melbourne and it will be the host’s decision whether they can accept a student in a different time zone and 100% remotely. See more information here.

Placement options for WIL

Does Monash find me a placement or can I find my own?

You can choose to be matched to a placement (Monash sourced), or you can source your own (Student sourced).

Monash sourced: The dedicated WIL Arts team manages a database of hundreds of host partners. You can apply for the WIL team to match you to an opportunity for intakes: Summer A/B, Semester 1, Winter and Semester 2 . If you are interested in a Monash Sourced placement, please refer to our Monash sourced page.

*Please note: The Monash sourced application process is competitive and there is no guarantee of a placement or enrolment into a WIL unit within the semester that you apply for.

Student sourced: If you have very specific interests and preferences, you can use your network of contacts to find your own placement. You can contact a host organisation and arrange to complete a placement.

This can be with a host organisation either in Australia or overseas
The opportunity must have relevance towards your Arts degree, and contribute to the learning outcomes of the unit
To undertake a placement for credit, the host organisation must meet Monash University OHS and insurance guidelines
Your enrolment into the WIL unit is not guaranteed and you must not commence your placement until you receive official confirmation that your placement is approved. The WIL team is obligated to ensure the placement you have sourced meets all compliance guidelines as set out by faculty. You cannot receive credit for any hours already undertaken. Any delays in receiving all documentation will result in delays and/or our inability to confirm your enrolment.

Student sourced placements: I have found my own placement. When can I start?

Please note that you cannot start your internship until it has been approved by the WIL team.

What if I’m not sure what kind of placement I want?

The Work Integrated Learning (WIL) team is keen to match you up with an internship that meets your needs. For Monash sourced internship opportunities, students complete a comprehensive application form which records information such as: field(s) of study; career objectives; employability skills; personal goals; availability and restrictions. The WIL team uses this information to match you with a suitable internship opportunity.

Can I use a Research Assistant role with a Monash Academic as a WIL placement?

Under guidelines set by the faculty, the WIL team is unable to approve research assistant roles as internship opportunities. If you have sourced an RA role that you believe offers experiences beyond those usually associated with an RA role and might involve industry engagement or develop organisational skills in a supervised manner, you are welcome to email the WIL Arts team to discuss: wil.arts@monash.edu

Can I see what internships are available?

The WIL team has an active database of hundreds of host organisations and can match students across the full range of undergraduate and masters programs. We do not list the opportunities on the website but instead will ask you to provide information on your ideal placement via the Internship Proposal questions. You will answer these questions as part of the application process. We encourage you to mention any specific company names that you would like to work with, as part of your application. This also provides us with useful information of the kind of organisation and internship you are seeking.

General WIL Program FAQs

Can I apply for credit after I have completed an internship?

No. It is not possible to apply for credit for an internship or work placement after it has been completed, or after the point where your remaining hours would no longer meet the minimum requirements.

Can I do more than one WIL unit?

Graduate students can only complete APG5044 once.Undergraduate students can complete ATS3935 (6 CP) and ATS3129/ATS3130 (12 CP) through the course of their degree (at different organisations). You cannot complete two WIL Arts units at the same time.

Can I enrol myself on WES into a WIL unit?

Yes. Once you have been confirmed for a placement by the WIL team, you will be provided with self-enrolment periods for each teaching period. Only students with a confirmed placement will be able to enrol for a teaching period.

Is there coursework associated with the WIL units?

Yes, all WIL units have coursework (in addition to the required work hours with a partner organisation). See the handbook for the unit you wish to apply to for more details.

I've applied for WIL for an upcoming teaching period, how do I re-enrol?

For international students, you are recommended to enrol into other units that you wish to do if your application is not successful.

For domestic students, you are also welcome to enrol into other units that you wish to do if your application is not successful. Alternatively, you can underload and study less units for that particular semester to ensure that you have room to do the WIL units in the future.
