Celebrating sporting excellence at the 63rd Annual Monash Blues Awards

It was a night of celebration for Monash last Friday as students and staff came together for the 63rd Annual Monash Blues Awards, recognising the outstanding sporting achievements of our student-athletes representing the University in 2025.

This year we were proud to induct 74 students across 13 sports to the Blues community.

A Monash University Blue is the highest award available for sporting achievement at the University. With origins dating back to the early 19th century when they began at Oxford and Cambridge universities in the UK, the Blues Awards commenced at Monash in 1963 when the University’s Blues Committee was first established with a set of guiding principles and criteria to determine eligibility for each sport. Today, it’s a tradition that many other Australian universities also uphold, and an award which is recognised worldwide, synonymous with sporting excellence at the university level.

Additionally, we also acknowledged the following individuals:

Team Organiser of the Year Award

  • Emily Roche, for her leadership and participation in the sport of Basketball

Monash Sport Club Lifetime Contribution Awards

  • Hoey Yein Goh, for her 18 years of service in the sport of Kendo
  • Stephen Pearson, for his 29 years of service in the sport of Cricket
  • Keh Chu Chong, for her 35 years of services in the sport of Volleyball

UniSport Nationals Team Co-Captains

  • Ellen Walker, Table Tennis Club President
  • Mineth Nawarathna, Tennis Club President

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Experience) and Senior Vice-President Professor Sarah McDonald congratulated this year’s Blues awardees, describing them as “extraordinary individuals who embody the very best of our University”.

“Being recognised with a Monash Blue is not simply an acknowledgement of talent. It’s a recognition of something deeper – your discipline, your resilience, your capacity to strive for excellence in multiple arenas, often under immense pressure,” Professor McDonald said.

She also reflected on the “important place” that sport held within the student experience at Monash. “Sport brings people together. It builds community. It creates a sense of belonging that is essential to student wellbeing and success,” she said. “For many students, joining a sporting team is one of the first ways they connect with others. It’s where friendships are formed, where confidence grows, and where individuals find their place within the University community.”

Congratulations to the 2025 Monash Blues Award recipients
