Off-campus exams
If your final assessment timetable shows you have an off-campus eExam, you’ll need to find a quiet, private space to sit your eExam.
Sitting your eExam from home without supervision
What you'll need
- the link to the eAssessment platform
- a desktop or laptop computer, plugged into power
- a smartphone (with a QR code reader, camera and data)
- materials for handwritten answers, in case they are required as part of your eExam:
- a blue or black pen, or HB or 2B pencil
- blank A4 paper
- a smartphone to take photos of your answers and upload them.
Setting up your exam space
We suggest that you let your friends and family know that you’re sitting your exam and require a private quiet space for the duration of the eExam.
Put a sign on your door asking people to come back later and turn your voicemail on.
To ensure your internet connection is not interrupted or slowed, ask other people in your house not to watch Netflix or other streaming applications, or download large files while you’re sitting your exam.
What to do on the day
- Get your computer ready well before your exam so you’re feeling confident and prepared.
- Log into the eAssessment platform 10 minutes before your scheduled eExam using your student username and password, then navigate to your unit’s eExam – you may not be able to see the eExam link in the platform until two business days before your scheduled exam. If you start your exam late, you may not get your full exam time.
- Copy your eExam link and paste it into an Incognito Window in Chrome (you’ll be prompted to log in again).
- For in-semester eExams: your teaching staff will send you a link to your test through your unit’s Moodle forum.
- For eExams held during the final assessment period: use the link to the eAssessment platform.
- At the scheduled time of your exam, refresh your page. The Start exam button will turn blue – click to start your eExam.
- Rest and movement breaks (AAA students): If you’re registered with Disability Support Services and you’ve been permitted additional rest/movement time for your exam, it will be added to your exam duration and you’ll need to self-manage your rest breaks.
- Once you’ve finished, or your exam time ends, submit your eExam.
- If your exam requires handwritten answers, you must stop writing when your exam time ends. Use your smartphone to take and upload photos of your answer sheets. You’ll need to scan the QR code on screen, then follow the instructions on your computer to take and upload your photos. To see how it works, try a general knowledge practice exam.
- Review all your photos on screen to ensure they are clear. Once all your photos are confirmed, your eExam is complete.
During your break, you’re not permitted to access any exam materials or discuss your exam with anyone other than exam staff.
Keep an eye on how much exam time you have left and manage your rest time carefully so you don’t run out of time to finish your exam.
If you experience any difficulties on the day (technical or otherwise), contact exam support. They'll make sure you get the help you need.
If your internet connection drops out during your eExam, don’t panic – your eExam responses are automatically saved every 30 seconds.
Preparing to sit your eExam with supervision
Connecting with your supervisor
What you’ll need
- the link to the eAssessment platform
- a smartphone (with a QR code reader, camera and data)
- materials for handwritten answers, in case they are required as part of your eExam:
- a blue or black pen, or HB or 2B pencil
- blank A4 paper
- a smartphone to take photos of your answers and upload them
- a desktop or laptop computer with a working webcam and microphone to communicate with your online supervisor. You won't be allowed to sit your supervised eExam if the online supervisor can’t see or hear you.
Setting up your exam space
You’ll need a space where you can sit your eExam under exam conditions (conditions that are very similar to what you’d expect in an assessment venue):
- You’ll need a quiet, private room where you’re the only person present.
- Let your friends and family know that you’re sitting your exam and must not be interrupted. Interactions with others during your supervised eExam will be flagged and reported to your faculty. Put a sign on your door asking people to come back later and turn your voicemail on.
- The room must have good lighting, but light must not shine directly onto your webcam.
- Study materials must be out of sight and out of arm's reach.
- Ensure there’s no writing, stickers or notes on your desk or computer.
- If you have dual monitors, remove one of the monitors – you’re only allowed to use one monitor in the exam.
- Make sure there are no unauthorised materials on the floor under your desk.
What to do on the day
- Get your devices and room ready well before your exam so you’re feeling confident and prepared. See our device and system specifications page to confirm your device is set up correctly for a supervised eExam.
- Check the landing page of your eExam to confirm whether you have a closed book, open book or open access exam and what materials are allowed.
- 30 minutes before your exam is due to start:
- Log into the eExam platform using your Monash username and password.
- Navigate to your unit’s eExam. Copy the eExam link and paste it into an incognito window in Google Chrome (you’ll be prompted to log in again).
- Click the Join Supervisor button on the landing page of your eExam.
You’ll then need to review and agree to the exam Terms and Conditions that appear on the screen. - Allow the eVigilation platform access to your microphone and webcam, and make sure you’re sharing your entire screen.
- Check into your eExam: Vertify your identity by presenting photo ID (you may also need to upload photos of your room to make sure you’re working under exam conditions) and check which materials are authorised for your exam.
- Before you start your exam, read through the exam instructions on the eExam landing page. If you’re running late, you can still log in and start your eExam after its scheduled start time.
- Start your eExam. If you need to speak to your supervisor, use the eVigilation web chat function, or click the Raise hand button on the eVigilation window. Your supervisor may be attending to another student and will respond to you as quickly as possible.
- If your exam requires you to download then upload a file, you must upload your file(s) during your exam as you can’t do this once your exam has been submitted.
- If an exam question instructs you to, draw or handwrite your answer on blank A4 paper. Make sure you clearly label your handwritten answers with the corresponding question number. Once you've submitted your online answers, use your smartphone to take and upload photos of your handwritten answers. You’ll need to scan the QR code on screen, then follow the instructions on your computer to take and upload your photos. To see how it works, try a general knowledge practice exam.
- Rest and movement breaks (AAA students): If you’re registered with Disability Support Services and you’ve been permitted additional rest/movement time for your exam, you’ll need to let your online supervisor know when you want to take a break, and again when you return. They’ll monitor the time you leave and come back to make sure your remaining exam time is updated.
- Submit your eExam. Once you’ve submitted your eExam, or your exam time finishes, you must stop writing any paper-based answers. Your webcam feed and screen capture will continue recording until your supervisor confirms your session has ended.
- If your exam requires handwritten answers, you’ll need to show your answer sheets to your webcam, one by one. Just follow the instructions on your screen.
- Use your smartphone to take and upload photos of your answer sheets. You’ll need to scan the QR code on screen, then follow the instructions on your computer and smartphone to take and upload your photos (to see how it works, try a general knowledge practice exam).
- Review all your photos on screen to ensure they are clear. Once all your photos are confirmed, your eExam is complete. Your supervisor will check that everything is okay and then end the exam session recording. You can then close your browser tab.
During your break, you're not permitted to access your exam materials and you need to stay in your room in sight of your webcam. If you need to lie down or go to the bathroom, speak with your online supervisor first.
Keep an eye on how much exam time you have left and manage your rest time carefully so you don’t run out of time to finish your exam.
If you have any difficulties on the day (technical or otherwise), contact exam support. They'll make sure you get the help you need.
If your internet connection drops out during your eExam, don’t panic – your eExam responses are automatically saved every 30 seconds.
