Conceptual PlayWorlds in Pre-service Teacher Education in Vietnam
Overview
This project aims to improve pre-service teachers’ understandings of playful pedagogies through the introduction of Fleer’s Conceptual PlayWorld (CPW). Based on 12 years of research, Fleer’s CPW, a research informed pedagogical intervention, integrates children’s imagination and play to foster the rich learning of concepts in key curriculum areas.
Working with our collaborating institution, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education, two local partner universities in Vietnam, Hue University of Education and Vinh University, we will co-design professional learning to develop local expertise to integrate Fleer’s CPW into Pre-service Teacher Education (PTE) courses in a culturally responsive manner.
Our innovation of culturally responsive CPW pedagogy aims to support graduating teachers to be well prepared to implement the principal elements of playful pedagogies to enhance children’s competencies. By integrating our culturally responsive CPW approach in PTE courses in Vietnam, we will support the 2018 General Education Curriculum (GEC) of Vietnam and respond to Lego Foundation’s vision of supporting children’s learning and thriving by experiencing benefits of learning through play (LtP).
