Learning Strategy Cards: Designing for Student Success
At the heart of every great learning experience is a thoughtful design that blends creativity, research, and a deep understanding of how people learn. That’s where Learning Design comes in.
What is learning design?
Learning designers are the architects of education. They combine cutting-edge technology, pedagogical theory, and human-centred thinking to shape courses, training programs, and digital tools that enable all learners to succeed. Whether they’re crafting interactive online lessons, educational games, immersive simulations, or practical classroom experiences, learning designers play a critically important role in learning at university, in the workplace, school, and in the community.
Powered by HEDI: Innovation in action
Here at Monash, our HEDI (Hub for Educational Design and Innovation) community brings together leading researchers and educators at the forefront of learning design. From groundbreaking research on the science of feedback and video learning, to virtual reality classrooms and analytics-powered insights, HEDI is exploring how we can create richer, more effective learning environments. We are committed to using cutting edge research to create real tools for real learners.
Introducing the Learning Strategy Cards
One of the tangible outcomes of this research–practice partnership is the Learning Strategy Cards: a set of beautifully designed cards that distil key strategies for effective learning. Each card presents a powerful learning approach that students and educators can use to boost outcomes and confidence.
Whether you’re a teacher looking to scaffold study skills or a student aiming to refine your learning approach, these cards offer practical, proven guidance.
More than just a teaching tool, the cards are also a window into the complexity of learning design. They highlight the many factors learning designers consider when building learning experiences—from cognitive load to motivation, feedback to memory.

Why it matters
Helping students succeed isn’t just about delivering content—it’s about empowering them with the right strategies to take charge of their learning. The Learning Strategy Cards are a simple yet powerful way to bridge research, teaching, and learner experience.
They’re also a reminder of the thoughtful work that goes into designing effective learning environments—something our HEDI community is proud to lead.
