Harnessing generative AI for adult learners from disadvantaged backgrounds

Description

Being able to use generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), such as ChatGPT, effectively, creatively and critically can help adult learners from vulnerable backgrounds to improve their language, literacy, numeracy and employability skills which, in turn, has the potential to break down barriers of disadvantage and promote social mobility. The Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) program is well positioned to enable learners to develop relevant skills, knowledge and understandings about generative AI.

However, due to the rapidly evolving functionality and ease of accessibility of this technology, there are no clear guidelines in the SEE programs for students and teachers about how and when generative AI can be used in the program for both practical and critical skills. Furthermore, lack of research about generative AI in the sector has resulted in several key gaps in understanding.

This project will use a mixed-method research approach and provide a timely and empirically grounded response to this urgent gap in knowledge about the needs of the SEE program in relation to generative AI.

Tailored to the unique strengths and complex needs of the SEE program, the project will:

  • promote the SEE providers’ understanding of current knowledge, attitudes and capabilities associated with the use of generative AI among management, teachers and learners;
  • provide research-informed and evidence-based recommendations on how the needs of the SEE stakeholders can be addressed;
  • support effective decision-making, planning and resource allocation;
  • build the foundation for change and innovation in the sector.
