School of Learning and Teaching

Learning and Teaching

The School of Learning and Teaching enables some of the brightest minds in research and practice to address the big issues in teaching and learning.

Vision

The School of Learning and Teaching is recognised nationally and internationally for shaping the future of teacher education across the professional continuum, with a particular focus on high-quality initial teacher education. This work is grounded in deep disciplinary expertise, rigorous educational research, and principled engagement with the science and practice of learning and teaching in a complex and changing world.

Purpose

Our purpose is to influence how teachers are prepared to enter the profession, how teachers and school leaders continue to develop their practice, how learning and teaching quality is understood across educational settings, and how educational policy is informed. This work is grounded in research evidence from Monash and beyond, respectful of complexity, and committed to equity, inclusivity, sustainability and excellence in schooling.

Mission

Our mission is to understand and promote quality learning through outstanding teacher education. We support the sustainable preparation and ongoing development of teachers and school leaders, enabling them to teach with confidence, skill, creativity and professional judgement across diverse educational contexts.

We do this by:

  • integrating Indigenous knowledges, inclusive practices, and ethically responsible approaches across curricula, student experiences, and professional learning into structures and systems
  • being embedded in classrooms and community groups to connect theory with practice. It's a cyclical process - where we leverage practice learnings to inform our research to foster accessible and quality education for all.
  • conducting high quality, impactful research in teaching, learning and educational leadership
  • advancing curriculum and pedagogy through strong, authentic, agentic and practice-embedded learning experiences, grounded in exceptional disciplinary traditions in literacies, mathematics, science, the arts, and health and physical education
  • engaging critically and constructively with contemporary research in learning, teaching, educational design, and the scholarship of teaching and learning
  • preparing pre-service and in-service teachers to develop professional judgement to make informed, evidence-informed decisions about teaching approaches
  • contributing expert knowledge to public debate and policy development in learning teacher education, school improvement, and educational leadership

Through research, teaching, and professional engagement, we seek to strengthen the teaching profession, enhance leadership capability, and improve educational outcomes for all learners.
