Our rationale

The Royal Commission Report into family violence (2016) has identified Early Childhood Educators as important players in family violence prevention. A training program was needed to help early childhood educators better understand the issues surrounding respectful relationships, gender equality, gender-based violence and family violence prevention.

Our approach

This project involves using Concern-Based Adoption Model (C-BAM) and Self Assessment Manual to measure Victorian early childhood educators' concerns and readiness to teach children in the area of Respectful Relationships, gender equality, gender-based violence and family violence prevention.

The project is to also explore families' perspectives regarding ways to implement education programs for children on respective relationships and family violence prevention.

The specific project aims are to:

  • Identify educator knowledge and concerns, and increase knowledge about the role of early childhood educators in gender equality and family violence prevention
  • Identify educator knowledge about the drivers and causes of family violence
  • Use the research findings to develop the capacity of early childhood educators to model and build respectful relationships with children and with each other
  • Use the research findings to develop programs that increase the capacity of early childhood educators to plan and deliver a program that supports Respectful Relationships and gender equality.
