Immunisations in education settings

The University strongly recommends students, staff and visitors to be vaccinated to protect their health and the health of the broader Monash community. Monash University provides immunisations for placements (local and international) through the University Health Services.

The University strongly recommends all students in education settings to have the following immunisations prior to a placement:

  • Measles Mumps Rubella (MMR) (if non-immune)
  • Varicella – i.e. chicken pox (if non-immune)
  • Pertussis – i.e. whooping cough (dTpa) – every ten years
  • Influenza – every year (an annual immunisation)

In addition to the above, students placed in early childhood education and care centres, it is strongly recommended to have vaccinations for:

  • Hepatitis A.

It is a Monash University expectation that only those who are well and not presenting with respiratory or COVID-19 symptoms attend a Monash campus or location. The latest COVID-19 information can be found here. A placement host will have similar expectations to Monash University.

Placement host immunisation policies

Several placement hosts, especially early childhood and long day care centres, have implemented local (mandatory) policies requiring all staff, including pre-service teachers, who have contact with children in their care to have current immunisations for Measles, Mumps and Rubella, Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis/ Whooping Cough (dTpa immunisation) and Hepatitis A.

Depending on your placement host policy, you may be required to verify evidence of having these immunisations in order to protect the children that you will be working with from these diseases; as well as protecting yourself from being infected by the children.

The Professional Experience Office will contact you via email in advance of your placement if you are allocated to a centre requiring evidence of immunisations according to the placement host policy.
