Building on success through the Monash experience

Peter & Lily Cheng

At Monash University, we take pride in seeing our alumni make a real impact in the world. For Peter and Lily Cheng, their time at Monash was more than just an academic pursuit—it was a launching pad for taking their business, PACE OD, to new heights.

Specialising in organisational development and leadership coaching, Peter and Lily combined research with hands-on experience to refine their approach. Their work has made a meaningful difference in the lives of countless professionals, including one grateful client who shared: "I found it very helpful, something that I can actually use and share with my team for how to develop myself, how to improve my leadership."

While leading PACE OD, the couple pursued their PhDs at Monash, immersing themselves in a dynamic and intellectually rich environment. The university’s rigorous academic training and access to thought leaders deepened their understanding of leadership and organisational behaviour, giving them a competitive edge.

Reflecting on their journey, Peter and Lily credit Monash with broadening their perspectives and equipping them with the tools to enhance their business strategies. “Our studies added credibility and quality to our analytical skills and the ability to see things from a different perspective. It was a very rewarding journey,” Peter shared.

Beyond academics, they found a welcoming and supportive community that made their experience even more fulfilling. “We were so well supported during our studies,” Lily added. “They treated us as individuals and made us feel really valued.”

Bridging Research and Practice

Peter and Lily applied their PhD research outcomes into their business practices. By drawing on their deepened understanding of organisational psychology and behaviour gained through this research, they refined innovative programs that help businesses adapt to change and optimise performance.

"We wanted to bridge the gap between research and practical application," Peter explained. Their evidence-based approach resonates with companies across industries, positioning PACE OD as a trusted partner for organisations seeking to enhance leadership effectiveness and employee engagement. Their programs help leaders build resilience and make strategic decisions with confidence, and have made a meaningful difference in the lives of countless professionals, including one grateful client who shared: “I feel more empowered to improve my skills as a leader.”

PACE OD’s continued success is a testament to the couple’s dedication to learning and adaptation. "The corporate world is evolving rapidly, and we believe in equipping leaders with the skills to thrive in a dynamic environment," Lily emphasised.

Why Pursue a PhD?

For those considering a PhD, Peter and Lily’s journey is an inspiring example of how advanced studies can elevate both professional and personal growth. “The Monash professors were key—especially when you're juggling work as well… their support made all the difference,” Lily said. Peter and Lily would especially like to thank Len Cairns and Zane Diamond for their invaluable guidance throughout their PhD journey.

Their PhD studies not only enhanced their own careers but allowed them to make a meaningful impact on the leaders and organisations they work with. They believe that further education is not just about academic achievement, but about developing the ability to critically assess challenges, make informed decisions, and create purposeful change in the world.

Peter also acknowledged the personal sacrifices required during the PhD journey but stressed that the rewards outweigh the challenges. “There were moments of imbalance—long weekends locked away writing, missing time with family—but the satisfaction when you cross the finish line is worth it. And we couldn’t have done it without the support of our professors and peers.”

PACE OD’s continued success is a testament to the couple’s dedication to lifelong learning. "The corporate world is evolving rapidly, and we believe in equipping leaders with the skills to thrive in a dynamic environment," Lily emphasised.
