New CYPEP research: Towards a causal link between food insecurity and buy now, pay later use by young Australians

CYPEP is pleased to have its latest research paper, ‘Towards a causal link between food insecurity and buy-now-pay-later use by young Australians’, published in the journal Young Consumers. Authored by Beatriz Gallo Cordoba, Catherine Waite and Lucas Walsh, this paper aims to understand if buy now, pay later (BNPL) services, a digital type of credit that targets young consumers, acts as a protective or a risk factor for food insecurity among young consumers in Australia.
Using survey data from the Australian Youth Barometer, the paper shows evidence that BNPL is related to young consumers’ experiences of food insecurity and calls for the adoption of practices and stronger regulation to prevent young users becoming over-indebted.
