We are delighted to partner with Wallara on an exciting initiative that creates an expanded approach to inclusion within mainstream education. Monash Health and Physical Education students work with Wallara clients designing and participating in programs across numeracy and literacy, sport, physical activity, and health and movement. Our students gain valuable experience translating theoretical knowledge into practice while helping shape collaborative experiences for the users. The project builds on an existing program developed between the Faculty of Education and Wallara called ‘Keep on Learning’.
Describing the partnership, Wallara says it hopes that programs like this will inspire more clever ideas that will build greater social inclusion. Monash sends 40 pre-service teachers for each of the ten-week programs and sees the opportunity to have more exposure to disability integral to building confidence for teaching in the modern classroom. The majority of Australian students with disabilities now attend regular or special classes in mainstream schools and it is critical that we prepare future teachers to support participation and learning for students across the full range of abilities. This is an authentic experience and mutually beneficial which is why it continues to be successful.
