Credit for prior learning


To outline the principles for assessing and awarding credit towards Faculty of Education qualifications. The procedures provide a framework for the assessment of formal, informal and non-formal learning studies.


All coursework qualifications offered through the Faculty of Education. The granting of credit towards research qualifications is governed by the regulations of the University’s Research Graduate School Committee.

Policy statement

Credit assessed for Faculty of Education courses is based upon the regulations as stated in the University Calendar and the University Credit Policy.

This policy should be read in conjunction with the regulations as stated in the University Calendar and the University Credit Policy.

1. Delegated powers

Credit assessments and decisions are authorised by the following delegated staff members:

1.1 Where assessment is for Specified Credit, Courses Leader will assess for unit equivalence.

1.2 Where assessment is for Unspecified Credit, Student Services (prospective) and Education Success Advisers (current) will assess for unit weighting and level equivalence.

1.3 Where assessment is for Block Credit for a course, the Courses Leader will assess for unit level equivalence and total block credit points to be awarded.

1.4 Where assessment is for non-award course credit for a course, the Program Director will assess for unspecified unit, specified unit or block credit to be awarded.

1.5 Where assessment is for an alternate Faculty component of a double degree qualification, the application for credit will be assessed by the Teaching Faculty, according to their relevant credit processes and procedures.

1.6 In all cases where credit precedents are established for Faculty of Education qualifications and units, Student Services (prospective) and Education Success Advisers (current) can assess and award credit.

2. Minimum Faculty of Education proportion of study

2.1 With the exception of nested qualifications students must satisfy the minimum proportion of study requirements as set out in the below table, exceptions are stated in sections 2.2 and 2.3:

2.2 In the case of undergraduate double degrees, at least 48 credit points must be undertaken in each component of the double degree.

2.3 External accreditation requirements may restrict the amount of credit that may be granted within certain courses.

2.4 Where applicable, credit will be assessed in accordance with the Credit Framework - graduate coursework programs.

*2.5 An additional 12 credit points may be granted towards a 96 credit point masters program if:

  • an application has equivalent units not assessed as part of a qualification used for admissions; or
  • the additional credit is agreed in a formal articulation agreement.

The maximum credit awarded cannot exceed 60 credit points.

3. Credit validity

All credit approvals are deemed to be valid for a three year period based on the year of study in which the unit/course was completed. The three year validity does not apply if details of the basis of credit (e.g. titles, codes, awards) at either the awarding    or granting institution are amended.

4. Recency requirements

Credit will not be granted in respect of work and/or studies completed more than 10 years prior to the application for credit.

Block Credit is granted towards whole stages or components of a qualification. Block credit does not involve individual student assessment but is usually arranged through a credit transfer or articulation agreement with another education provider. Block  credit involves credit being granted for a whole section of a course such as a semester or year of full-time study in the course, rather than for specific units.

Credit is the value assigned for the recognition of equivalence in content and learning outcomes between different types of learning and/or qualifications which reduces the amount of learning required to achieve a qualification. Credit may be through  credit transfer, articulation, recognition of prior learning or advanced standing.

Specified Credit is granted towards core and/or particular components in a qualification, identified by a Monash unit code.

Unspecified Credit is granted towards components in a qualification where the Monash unit code is not specified. Credit is given for the credit point value and level of a Monash unit.
