Bairnsdale, Victoria

Bairnsdale is located in East Gippsland, Victoria on the banks of the Mitchell River, 285km east of Melbourne.

The Bairnsdale rural professional experience program is new in 2023. It is run and funded by the Country Education Partnership (CEP).

Program overview

  • Where: Bairnsdale, Victoria
  • When: Semester 2
  • Who: Pre-Service Teachers in Primary and Secondary courses
  • Cost: Living expenses only

Students are asked to make their own way to Bairnsdale with travel options including driving, carpool or V-Line train or bus. Pre-Service Teachers (PSTs) will be able to meet each other at an information session at the University prior to the commencement of the program and this will present opportunities to discuss travel arrangements.

Student shared accommodation is in cabins at the Riverside Caravan park which has WiFi and is close to schools. This shared living fosters support and collaboration between PSTs.

Students will be placed in either a local primary, secondary or specialist school to meet the requirements of their placement unit. They will receive ongoing support from other PSTs at their school and/or house, their mentor, an experienced Organiser of Teaching Practice at their school, a Monash Professional Practice Consultant and a CEP Mentor Mental Health and Well Being support person.

Costs

  • The CEP funding covers accommodation, a welcome dinner, Buchan Caves tour, and winery/brewery tour.
  • PSTs need to cover their own living expenses. This may include travel to and from Bairnsdale, groceries and spending money.
