In this program, participants will develop knowledge of how to teach EAL learners within the context of the Australian/state curriculum and the broader school community. They will explore strategies to address the linguistic and cultural diversity of EAL students and gain an understanding of the language demands of their classroom from the perspective of an EAL learner.
Participants will examine how concepts such as plurilingualism and multimodality can support learning. They will also explore digital technology tools to enhance learning experiences and examine how generative AI can support EAL students with language development and content learning.
The program also considers formative and summative assessment approaches that help EAL students learn and demonstrate what they know. Participants will discuss how to create a dialogic classroom that fosters meaningful interactions between EAL students and their peers and encourages active participation.
By engaging with this program, participants will develop a deeper understanding of how to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment for EAL learners.

Duration
- Structured learning activities: 24 hours inclusive of 6 modules (two-hours x 6 online synchronous activities and two-hours x 6 online asynchronous activities)
- Self-directed learning: 120 hours including weekly reading, in-class activities, discussion forums, quizzes and interactive activities.

Prerequisites
This course is designed for Secondary teachers from across all learning areas.
Assessment
Participants will complete two practical assessment tasks focused on understanding the language and learning needs of EAL students and applying these insights to classroom planning and practice (4000 words total).
Recognition
This course references the following Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST): 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6.
You will receive a Certificate of Completion with a statement of credit equivalency from the Faculty of Education, Monash University.
Microcredential
This program has been formally accredited by the Faculty of Education as equivalent to six (6) credit points at the postgraduate level (i.e. equivalent to one x 6 credit point unit/subject). In order for this to occur a formal assessment component has been included in the program (two assessment tasks).
Participants successfully completing the assessment who apply for a master's degree at Monash, and who are eligible for admission (i.e. meet the Monash academic and English Language admission requirements) would then be granted advanced standing for one 6 credit point unit/subject at the postgraduate level.
These credit points will be awarded as specified credit towards D6005 Master of TESOL, D6002 Master of Education, including its associated specialisations, and D6013 Master of Educational Leadership, subject to available space within the student's course map.
