Exploring Simulations and Virtual Learning Spaces at Monash University: Insights from our recent HEDI Workshops

The Hub for Educational Design and Innovation (HEDI), led by Professor Michael Henderson and Dr Jo Blannin, recently facilitated a focused workshop at Monash University.
This 1.5-hour interactive session gathered 22 senior representatives from six different areas and faculties of the university, all keen to explore the capabilities of Virtual Reality (VR) and immersive technologies within educational settings.
The primary aim of the workshop was to explore and share the current and potential applications of simulations and virtual spaces as transformative tools in education. Attendees heard from colleagues about their current use and research of VR and simulations and then engaged in discussions around integrating these technologies across various educational contexts.
Key outcomes from the workshop included the identification of several benefits of using VR and simulated environments for learning, including:
- Real-time coaching and feedback opportunities within VR settings.
- Comprehensive scenario-based learning where individuals can rehearse and refine interpersonal skills.
- Enhanced skill acquisition and readiness through immersive VR feedback.
- Exploration of diversity and inclusion through simulations and virtual worlds.
These discussions emphasised the growing significance of simulations and virtual learning environments in enriching educational and research activities at Monash University.
