1. Researchers

We invite researchers from within Monash as well as other institutions to work with us.

We also encourage interdisciplinary researchers who may be interested in educational research but are uncertain how to begin, or need support in elevating scholarship to broader research. We may be able to help connect you with relevant researchers, or help you directly.

If you are part of a group - then you may also be interested in HEDI’s Living Scholarship Lab initiative.

The Living Scholarship Lab is a HEDI initiative designed to facilitate interdisciplinary research in the broad field of education. HEDI recognises the value of interdisciplinary perspectives, theories and methodologies. HEDI also recognises the value of researching one’s own practices, sometimes referred to as Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, as an important step in not only improving students' experience and outcomes in a local context, but also as a step towards broader impact through dissemination and larger research agendas.
Project Features:
The HEDI living lab is established through an agreement - in which a HEDI researcher, expert in educational research, is assigned to work with a small group of educators who may not be familiar with educational theory, research methods, or impact strategies. Each of the educators may have their own specific research project, or the group of educators may have a collective, or thematically connected project. For instance, a group of educators in one department may want to collectively work on a project around implementing a new technology to support a particular learning outcome.
The HEDI researcher will meet the lab members regularly, and support them to frame their collective or individual research projects, ensuring that their work is robust and contributes new knowledge about effective educational design and innovation. The HEDI Living Lab aims to improve confidence in findings, improve the team capability to conduct independent educational research, and result in one or more joint publications and other outputs.
HEDI Living Labs operate over a period of time with defined milestones and goals. The Living Lab is intended to be an enjoyable, collaborative activity leading to improved team capabilities and improved student outcomes.
Our first living scholarship lab is a great example of how a community can work together to inspire scholarship in their teaching and learning practices:
Gippsland Medical Education - 'Writing Up What Works'
Lab Directors: Dr Tammy Smith and Dr Jo Blannin
Spearheaded by Dr Tammy Smith (Rural Health) and Dr Jo Blannin (Education), the Gippsland Medical Education Initiative is informed by the Living Scholarship Lab's core principles of open innovation and community collaboration, this initiative brings together healthcare professionals and education experts to co-design and evaluate innovative health education approaches.
Launched in 2023, the initiative is the first HEDI Living Scholarship Lab. The team's efforts are concentrated on developing skills and knowledge of impactful teaching methodologies, enhancing student engagement, and fostering a deeper understanding of rural healthcare education.
Through this collaborative work, participants are led to reflect on their current teaching approaches. They are then supported to explore and engage with educational research and evidence-based practices. Implementation of the chosen approach is followed by data collection and analysis, finally leading to a co-authored academic piece (journal articles, conference presentations etc).
The lab has taken a pragmatic orientation towards its goals - and as a result has adopted its name “Writing up What Works”. WUWW is pronounced ‘woah’ - expressing surprise and interest.
The Gippsland Medical Education initiative will provide valuable insights and proven practices that can be adapted and implemented in similar medical education contexts. The project is ongoing.

2. EdTech Industry

HEDI directors have a long history of working with EdTech companies seeking to improve and demonstrate the efficacy of their products and services.

In partnership with EduGrowth and scholars from Deakin University, HEDI Director Professor Michael Henderson developed two connected and impactful models: a EdTech efficacy evaluation model and a EdtEch-Research partnership model. 3. Education and Workplace learning

HEDI works with leaders of educational institutions, learning designers and team leads to implement and evaluate innovative technology enabled learning designs.

HEDI directors have influenced national educational policy and worked with government, philanthropic, and business stakeholders to build and shape impactful educational strategies. HEDI director Professor Henderson has been involved in the shaping of the Australian Government’s Framework for Artificial Intelligence in Schools and the TEQSA statement on Assessment reform for the age of artificial intelligence.

HEDI has also designed and delivered courses to increase workforce capabilities in the field of educational design. HEDI Directors have designed and delivered courses on technology enabled learning design to over 200 school educators and principals.
