Professional Certificate of Education Support

Supporting students with additional learning needs in primary, secondary and special development schools.

This program will equip you with the skills and knowledge to support students who have additional learning needs to access the curriculum and will assist you to work in an Education Support role (Integration Aide / Teacher Aide position). The Professional Certificate of Education Support has been delivered for two decades by highly experienced educators. It is a well-recognised program in Victorian schools.

Duration

Online program:

  • Day sessions:
    • Two X 2-hour online classes per day for 7 days over 2 weeks, OR
    • Two X 2-hour online classes per day, one day a week over 7 weeks
  • Evening session: Two X 2-hour online evening classes per week (on Tuesday and Thursday evenings) over 7 weeks

Please note: Completion of additional individual online activities is also required - approximately 1 hour per topic.

Independent study: Participants will also engage in readings and independent study throughout the program.

Course materials and equipment

Online program: You will require internet access and a laptop, computer or other device that will enable you to join a virtual classroom and access an online learning portal. Your chosen device requires a camera, microphone and sound as the sessions are live online classes using Zoom.

Prerequisites

There are no formal prerequisites for this program. However, it is essential that you must possess a satisfactory level of English written and communication skills to complete the assessment tasks. We also expect you to have basic computer skills to support your learning.

Please note that participants must be over 18 years of age on the start date of this program.

Assessment

Assessment tasks consist of:

  • class participation - minimum class attendance required (you must attend at least 12 of the 14 virtual classes - Topic 1 is compulsory)
  • journal
  • application for a position as an education support staff person
  • case study

Recognition

On successful completion of the program, including assessment tasks, you will receive a Certificate of Completion from the Faculty of Education, Monash University.

Completion of program

In special circumstances approved on a case by case basis with appropriate evidence, students can be granted 12 months from the program start date to defer the completion of the program.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this program a Certificate III in Education Support?

No, Certificate III courses are offered by Vocational Education and Training (VET) providers such as TAFEs and Registered Training Organisations (RTOs). Monash University is not a VET provider. Our program is a stand-alone certificate.

Is this program accredited?

No, accreditation normally refers to VET course accreditation. Monash University is not a VET provider, but a tertiary education provider.

A formal qualification is not currently required to work in this field in Victoria. However, study in this area will greatly benefit your career prospects.

Is there a school placement in this program?

No, mandatory school placement is not compulsory in the Professional Certificate of Education Support. Instead, participants are encouraged to seek voluntary work at their convenience.

Are sessions recorded?

No, no sessions will be recorded as they are live online classes.
