Pippa’s desire to understand the natural world, capture new knowledge, and effect change led her to pursue a career in research science. Her sense of awe for the way chemicals can be designed, manipulated, and synthesized to create molecules that modulate the body’s own functions prompted her to undertake her bachelor’s degree in Pharmaceutical Science at Monash University.
She discovered through her studies and undergraduate research opportunities that she was particularly interested in exploring the very initial stages of drug development: understanding the basic mechanisms that underpin disease onset and development.
Pippa is currently completing her honours degree in the Neuroinflammation Lab at the Florey Institute. Her work uses gene editing technology in human neuronal cells to explore the molecular mechanisms involved in neurodegenerative disease. The project focuses on how genetic variance interacts with environmental stress to trigger the onset of rapid neurodegeneration, within the context of Motor Neurone Disease and Perry Syndrome. She is particularly interested in exploring the role of pathological accumulation of TDP-43 in disease progression.
She aims to conduct her research with patient experience at the heart of her work, from initial idea conception through to results communication.

Kelsey James Hole is currently a fourth-year Pharmaceutical Science and Chemical Engineering student. Ending high school with a passion for science, particularly chemistry, he found that the double degree would allow him to further his knowledge in chemistry without depriving him of the opportunity to explore other sciences. Through engagement with the engineering side of the degree, Kelsey has developed a much deeper appreciation for mathematics and hopes to pursue further math-related studies.
Having taken advantage of the many pharmaceutical science-related opportunities provided by Monash, Kelsey has completed projects specified by major Australian cosmetic brands and undertaken invaluable weeks of work-integrated learning related to contract analytical testing, primarily of food and beverage products. He now looks forward to gaining real-world experience related to the chemical engineering aspect of his degree.
"I would like to thank all those who made it possible for me to receive this prize: my family, friends, and the Monash staff."
