Leading researcher and educator, Professor Carl Kirkpatrick from Monash’s Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, has been named a 2024 Fellow of the British Pharmacological Society (BPS).
Fellows of the BPS are members who have made substantial contributions to the disciplines of pharmacology, clinical pharmacology and therapeutics through their work, publication and presentation of research, leadership, and Society life.
“It’s truly an honour to be recognised by my peers, of whom I greatly respect, and to be named a Fellow of BPS, an organisation that has contributed so much to advancing pharmacology research and education globally,” Professor Kirkpatrick said.
“I would like to extend my gratitude to the BPS for this honour, I am truly grateful and humbled by their recognition.”
Professor Kirkpatrick is an expert in pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic modelling, an exciting field that helps drug researchers and clinicians to understand how well and how long a drug will affect the body. His work aims to optimize pharmacotherapy to improve patient outcomes, often in vulnerable patient groups.
Alongside colleagues from the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (MIPS), which sits within the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Professor Kirkpatrick is applying his modelling expertise to the recently established Monash-Moderna Quantitative Pharmacology Accelerator (MMQPA).
Together, the team are leveraging a range of modelling methodologies to accelerate the development and application of mRNA-based therapies including vaccines and therapeutics.
In addition to MMQPA, Professor Kirkpatrick’s multifaceted pharmacology expertise encompasses notable contributions to pharmacometrics, quantitative systems pharmacology, and model-informed drug development, especially in the area of anti-infective therapies. He has also held leadership roles in the Australasian Society of Clinical and Experimental Pharmacologists and Toxicologists (ASCEPT), including President. He is currently the Congress Chair for the World Congress of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (WCP2026) to be held in Melbourne in 2026.
He teaches into undergraduate and postgraduate pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences degrees and conducts much of his research through the Centre for Medicine Use and Safety, MIPS.
Director of MIPS, Professor Chris Porter, said this recognition represents many years of dedication to both research and education.
“Carl has, and continues to make, significant contributions to our Parkville campus and the wider national and international scientific community and I congratulate him for this very well-deserved recognition,” Professor Porter said.
